STS Newsroom Internships 2022

4 February 2022

After launching in 2021, the STS Newsroom Internships are back this year, focusing on creating news contents about the department.

Modules and Courses

After a successful launch in 2021, STS is excited to renew its commitment to offer six paid studentships for work experience within the STS Newsroom.

The STS newsroom is a group of six STS students, working one day a week for 10 weeks during term 3, under the supervision of Professor Joe Cain and Dr Jean-Baptiste Gouyon. They create news contents about STS which will be used in the Department’s outward communication. This will include written content for the Departmental magazine, Alchemy and the STS podcast series, “We Are STS”.

Each studentship involves 80 hours in total, envisioned as approximately 8 hours work per week for ten weeks, paid at £12.93 per hour. The students will run between 25 April and 30 June 2022 and they are intended primarily for undergraduate students to offer paid work experience in news writing. Taught postgraduate students may apply, but undergraduates will be considered preferentially.

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must demonstrate general knowledge and understanding of Science and Technology Studies as a subject area and must be a currently enrolled UCL students. Some relevant experience in STS is essential (e.g. students should have taken at least the modules HPSC0107, or HPSC0122, or equivalent). General skills for the post include excellent time management, ability to work independently and to multi-task, excellent communication skills, and ability to take initiative. Bilingual students are especially welcome to apply.

Those wishing to apply must submit a one-page CV and a 200-word writing sample, based on an interview with any one individual connected to STS. In addition, please provide the name of one academic referee who can be asked to advise during the selection process.
