With our History MA, you can choose from a unique range of study options. They cover the Russian Empire, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Habsburg Monarchy, the Ottoman Empire and the German Empire and their successor states.

Our programme allows you to focus on this fascinating part of the world, spanning from the early modern period to contemporary history. You’ll learn research methods and take thematic courses ranging from the History of Berlin to Russian Monarchy to Socialist Modernity. All students take a dissertation which is shaped by their interests and the SSEES Library proves an invaluable resource for MA students, with its unrivalled collections and specialist librarians in area studies.

As with all SSEES degrees, multidisciplinarity is encouraged and you will have the option to take modules from SSEES politics, culture or language to support your studies. History features in many of our area-based research centres and collaborations with other institutions mean our events schedules draw in not only the expertise of SSEES academics but renowned historians and authors from other universities and organisations.
