Language and Culture UG Handbook (Russian and History BA)

Russian and History BA

  • You must register for exactly 120 credits per year of study;
  • You must have taken and passed 90 credits of Level 6 modules by the end of the final year;
  • You are not permitted to take more than 150 credits of Level 4 modules over the course of your programme;
  • The Year Abroad must be passed

Year One

Compulsory Modules

You will take 60 credits from Russian language and culture modules and 60 Credits from History modules

Compulsory Modules
30 credits in Russian language:

Either (when Russian is ab initio):
•    SERS0001 - Comprehension of Russian (Year 1A) (15 Credits)  
•    SERS0002 - Use of Russian (Year 1A) (15 Credits)

Or (when Russian is post A Level):
•    SERS0003 - Comprehension of Russian (Year 1) (15 Credits)
•    SERS0004 - Use of Russian (Year 1) (15 Credits)

30 credits in Russian culture:
•    SERS0010 - The Making of Modern Russian Culture (15 Credits)

Optional Modules (15 credits) - choose one from the following:

•    SERS0008: Russian Short Fiction from Romanticism to Postmodernism (15 credits)

•    SERS0012: Representations of Russia (15 credits)

•    SERS0014: Russian Cinema: History, Ideology, Society (15 credits)

60 credits in History:
•   EITHER: HIST0488 History of Russia 1598-1856
•   OR: HIST0483 History of the Habsburg Monarchy 1700-1918

•    SEHI0003: Frontiers of History (30 credits)

In your second year, you must choose a total of 120 credits, 60 credits from Russian language and culture modules and 60 Credits from History modules.

Russian Language and Culture (60 credits)

Compulsory Modules: 30 credits in Russian language:

Either:
•    SERS0016: Comprehension of Russian (Year 2A) (15 credits)
•    SERS0018: Use of Russian (Year 2A) (15 credits)
Or:
•    SERS0020: Comprehension of Russian (Year 2) (15 credits)
•    SERS0022: Use of Russian (Year 2) (15 credits)

Compulsory module: 15 credits in Russian culture:
One 15-credit module from Year 2 Literature/Culture options, for example:
SERS0025 - Russian Poetry from Pushkin to Brodsky (15 Credits)
SERS0027 - Russian Cinema Men and Women
SERS0029 - Chekhov The Quest for Freedom
SERS0031 - The Person Love and Utopia in Russian Thought
SERS0033 - Identities in Nineteenth- Century Russian Literature [R]
SERS0034 - The Petersburg 'Text' in Russian Literature and Culture: From Romanticism to Modernism

Optional Modules
15 credits in culture:

•    Either: from Level 5 Russian culture modules (may include SERS0034, if not already chosen)
•    OR:  from Level 5 modules with codes beginning SEEE


History (60 credits)

From selected Survey or Thematic History modules (60 credits). You may also take up to 15 credits in Level 6 Advanced Seminar modules - please consult the guidance supplied. A full list of modules can be found on the UCL History Website

Year Abroad

Your third year is spent abroad at an institution in Russia, taking 120 credits. You will normally spend this year studying at a university, but alternatives, such as work placements, may be possible. Further details are contained in the Year Abroad Handbook. 

Year Four

By the end of Year 4 you need to have taken a minimum of 90 credits in Level 6 modules over Years 2 and 4 together.

Russian language and culture (60 credits)

Compulsory Modules

15 credits in Russian language:
•    SERS0039: Use of Russian (Year 4) (15 credits)

Optional Modules

•    either 45 credits from optional Level 6 Russian language/culture modules. (View SSEES modules)
•    or 30 credits from optional Level 6 Russian language/culture modules and 15 credits from modules with codes beginning SEEE

Optional modules may include a maximum of one further module in Russian language from:

SERS0037: Comprehension of Russian (Year 4)
SERS0106: Reading and Discussion of Texts in Russian 
SERS0107: Writing Editing and Blogging in Russian

Other options may include:

SEEE0012- Crossroads of Culture: Language and Identity in the Literatures of Ukraine from Crimea to the Shtetls  (Inter-departmental) (15 credits)
SERS0108 - Saboteurs, Stakhanovites and Spies: Writing the Stalinist 1930s



History (60 credits)
History modules are delivered by the UCL HIstory Department. When choosing modules please make sure that you have at least 90 credits of Level 6 modules.

60 credits in History Modules
•    Either: a Special Subject module (comprising 30 credits of taught module and 30 credits dissertation)
•    Or: a Special Subject module (comprising 30 credits of taught module only) and 30 credits SESS0053: Freestanding Dissertation on a History subject)   
•    Or: Two Advanced Seminar modules and SESS0053: Freestanding Dissertation on a History topic
