Overview
This practical one-day CPD course will focus on setting up and using the dental operating microscope for restorative dentistry.
You'll also understand its components.
Dentists new to microscopy will be able to experience the revelation of first-time use.
More experienced users will learn to improve ergonomics and efficiency, visualise the more difficult areas of the mouth, and improve patient communications.
The course is run by the UCL Eastman Dental Institute in London, which has a broad range of continuing professional development (CPD) short courses. These provide hands-on training from experienced staff in dedicated facilities.
Course content
The course will cover the following:
- Introduction to the equipment
- Setting up the microscope for the individual operator
- Patient positioning for best access
- Optimal access to the various areas of the mouth
- Nursing roles
- Choice of equipment to use with the microscope
- Restorative techniques
- Ergonomic concepts to improve working comfort
- Image capture and documentation
- Patient communications
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course you should be able to:
- understand how to use the microscope in restorative dentistry
- understand how use of the microscope increases the predictability of restorative dentistry procedures
Who this course is for
The course is for dental practitioners.
You'll need to hold an approved dental qualification.
Structure, teaching and assessment
The course will run from approximately 9:30am to 5pm.
It will start with a short presentation followed by a day of practical exercises.
You'll operate on phantom heads using bench-mounted Zeiss microscopes.
There will also be time spent in the clinical area where you'll experience the use of the scope in a clinical setting.
You'll learn which are the most appropriate magnifications for a range of restorative techniques and how to get access to some of the trickier areas of the mouth.
The course instructor is a keen photographer and will discuss how to capture outstanding digital images, as well as how these can be shared with patients and colleagues.
CPD points and certificate
The course will give you 6.5 hours of verifiable CPD.
You'll also receive a certificate of attendance.
Quality controls
All Eastman teachers are experienced professionals. You'll be asked to submit written feedback via a questionnaire at the end of the course, which is used to monitor the course's quality of teaching and value for money.

Course team

Greg Finn
Greg studied for his Master's in Conservative Dentistry at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute, and has been teaching there since 1997. He originally gained his BDSc from the University of Queensland. He's recognised as a specialist prosthodontist by the General Dental Council.
He teaches on the programmes for the Certificate and Diploma in Restorative Dental Practice as part of the Master's program. Other programmes he teaches on include: Advanced Aesthetic Dentistry UCL Certificate Programme and Sports Dentistry. He also regularly teaches composite resin technique to dental therapists and presents on implants to the MClinDents and MSc postgraduates.
His teaching areas include clinical photography, aesthetics, indirect and direct restorations, laboratory techniques, impression techniques, diagnostic waxing, occlusion, treatment planning for complex cases and enamel and dentine bonding.
