Overview
This two-day CPD course will improve your theoretical and practical understanding of conscious sedation.
The course aims to:
- consolidate and improve your knowledge in conscious sedation in dentistry
- provide basic understanding of: anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, patient assessment, sedation equipment and management of complications
- provide a practical session of IV canulation and inhalation sedation techniques
The course provides 13 hours of verifiable CPD (continuing professional development).
Please note, this course is CPD only and will not qualify you to be the second appropriate person for sedation.
The course is run by the UCL Eastman Dental Institute in London.

- Anatomy and physiology

- Equipment
- Medico-legal aspect
Who this course is for
It's for qualified dental nurses who are registered with the General Dental Council (GDC).
This course may be of special interest to dental nurses who assist in surgery using conscious sedation or who wish to pursue a qualification in Conscious Sedation in Dentistry.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course you should have gained experience in managing and assessing patients who are having dental treatment under sedation.
Structure and teaching
The course is taught over two days. Each day will run from approximately 9:30am to 5pm.
The course will be delivered through lectures, demonstrations and small group practical sessions.
CPD points and certificate
You'll gain 13 hours of verifiable CPD, plus a certificate of attendance.
Quality controls
All Eastman teachers are experienced professionals. You'll be asked to submit written feedback via a questionnaire at the end of the course, which is used to monitor the course's quality of teaching and value for money.

Course team

Roberto Sacco - course leader
Roberto qualified in dentistry from the University of Florence in 2003. From 2004 to 2007 he worked as Research Fellow in Prosthodontics and then Clinical Research Associate in the Oral and Maxillofacial department at the University of Florence. In 2007 he was appointed Special Registrar in Oral Surgery at the University of Sassari and obtained his specialisation in 2010. The same year, he moved to the UK to work in both primary and secondary care as Oral Surgeon.
Over these years of practice, he's developed a special interest in treating anxious patients under sedation and gained a Postgraduate Certificate in Sedation and Pain Management at Eastman Dental Institute in 2014.
Roberto works as Oral Surgery Specialist/Honorary Clinical Teaching Fellow at King’s College Hospital where he is heavily involved in dental education, training and assessment of undergraduate and postgraduate students. In addition, he works as Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow - Sedation Deputy Director at UCL Eastman Dental Institute.
