Preventing slips, trips and falls at UCL

30 January 2024

Think UCL is accident-free? Think again. In 2023, 30% of reported injuries were caused by slips and trips. A misstep here, a spilled coffee there and suddenly you're sidelined. This article unlocks the secrets to preventing these everyday mishaps.

Slips, trips, and falls account for roughly a third (32%) of all reported major injuries reported to the Health and Safety Executive in 2022/23.  Forget expensive equipment or complex procedures. The key to preventing these everyday mishaps lies in understanding the 6 pillars of slip and trip prevention.

From tackling floor contaminants to keeping walkways clear, we've shared some practical tips like choosing the right footwear (ditch those flip-flops!), mastering the "see it, sort it" mentality, and even designing spaces that prioritise our two feet.

Contamination

  • Imagine this  coffee spills on the library floor, turning that smooth surface into a potential skating rink. That's contamination.
    • How to fix it: Identify the source, prevent it or add control measures like cleaning and proper footwear.
    • How to fix it: Use the right method for the right spill. Use appropriate cleaners and techniques for each spill. Read about responding to chemical spills.

Cleaning

  • Cleaning isn't just about making things shiny, it's about safety! Remember that time a floor felt treacherously slippery?
    • How to fix it: We all have a role. Report spills and avoid shortcuts that might create hazards. Use suitable methods for the floor and contaminant. Don't spread the hazard! Read about UCL's cleaning service.

People

  • Distracted by your phone while rushing to a meeting? You're not alone! But remember, distractions and improper footwear can turn a simple step into a stumble.
    • How to fight it: Be aware, avoid distractions and wear sensible shoes (flat soles, good grip).

Walkways

  • Remember that time you tripped over a forgotten backpack in a hallway? Cluttered walkways are another enemy.
    • How to fix it: Don't leave your belongings where they can become tripping hazards and stick to marked paths and avoid shortcuts through messy areas.

Housekeeping

  • Effective housekeeping isn't just about having a tidy space. It's about proactively creating an environment where the risk of accidents is minimised.

Design and maintenance

  • Imagine a floor that's both beautiful and safe. That's the power of smart design and maintenance!
    • How to fix it: At UCL smart design is at the core of our building design. We choose surfaces with good grip for high-traffic areas and floors are level and free of tripping hazards. We need to ensure that repair cracks, tears or uneven surfaces are reported to prevent accidents.

See it, report it!

A little awareness goes a long way in preventing those everyday mishaps. If you see something that concerns you, don't think twice. Report it! Let's work together to keep everyone safe.
