Laser Safety Officer training

28 February 2023

The role of the Laser Safety Officer is to manage and supervise artificial optical radiation safety in line with the Artificial Optical Radiation Safety Standard. Laser Safety Officers must attend the Laser Safety Officer course and our next annual course runs this spring.

Departments that use Class 3B and Class 4 lasers must have at least one appointed Laser Safety Officer who has attended the Laser Safety Officer training course. Additional LSOs may be required depending on the number and complexity of laser set-ups that a department uses.

Laser Safety Officer (LSO) course - 22 March 2023

This one-day virtual training course runs every spring and is designed for individuals who will be appointed as a departmental Laser Safety Officer or as a refresher for those already appointed to this role.

Topics

  • Basics of laser radiation
  • Biological effects of laser radiation (including indirect effects)
  • Effective laser safety management
  • The role of the Laser Safety Officer at UCL
  • Approving laser risk assessments and setups
  • Practical control measures (hierarchy of controls, including PPE)
  • Incidents, accidents and contingency plans
  • Legislation, standards, and guidance

There will be no charge for the course. However, persons undertaking the course will be expected to fulfill the responsibilities of a Laser Safety Officer. Places on this annual course are limited and in the event the course is oversubscribed, priority will be given to those departments that do not currently have a trained Laser Safety Officer.

You will be charged if you fail to attend when booked on a course in line with the UCL Cancellation Policy.
