One of our core aims has been to develop better methods for identifying the ecology of early rice, including how the ecologies of wild rice lead into the development of cultivated rice, and different rice cultivation ecologies. This draws on observations of modern traditional rice cultivation and wild rice stands where associated flora (weeds) can be observed and reference collection in terms of soil phytolith assemblages were collected.
