10:00 - 10:05 - Introduction to UCL Public Policy (Katherine Welch, Acting Head)
10:05 - 10:20 - Planning a successful
media strategy
Policy and Public Affairs Officer Dave Eaton will deliver
a presentation on how researchers working within the social sciences can
integrate communication and dissemination activities into projects from
inception. He will also discuss the elements of a successful media and public
affairs strategy.
10:20 - 11:10 - Media buy-in and interview
technique
Workshop attendees will separate into two groups (led by
Dave Eaton and Research Fellow Dr Brian Beach) to receive individual feedback
on how best to present their research to achieve media buy-in, and to practise
media interview techniques.
11:10 - 11:30 - Policy
impact
Dr Brian Beach will deliver a presentation on how early
career researchers can begin to think about the policy implications of their
research; how to approach policymakers; how to present research findings to
Government and industry, and how to maximise the impact of policy
recommendations.
11:30 - 11:50 - Influencing
policymakers
Baroness Sally Greengross OBE will provide a Peers
perspective on how social scientific research can help the work of
Parliamentarians. She will discuss how to engage politicians; present evidence
to parliamentary group; gain exposure via parliamentary debates, and affect
legislation.
11:50 - 12:05 - Break
12:05 - 12:25 - Pitching to the media and policymakers
Workshop attendees will be invited to consolidate what they have learnt by giving a two separate one minute pitches: one to brief the media, and one to gain the attention of policymakers.
12:25 - 12:40 - Final
Q&A
Workshop attendees will have the opportunity to ask any
final questions.
