Tricks of the Trade: generating ideas for interdisciplinary research

On 24 March 2017 Sir Alan Wilson, Professor of Urban and Regional Systems, Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, UCL and Chief Executive, Alan Turing Institute, gave the first Tricks of the Trade talk to a group of early career researchers.

In this talk, Alan Wilson presented a view of the foundations of research planning which will support originality and ambition within interdisciplinary frameworks. He discussed both basic and applied research ('real challenges') and introduced the idea of super concepts that cross disciplines. Above all, he argued that 'thinking outside the box' can generate new ideas and open up new territories. Alan has kindly agreed to make the presentation slides and supporting blog articles available from our website.  we hope that you will find them useful as you plan your research projects.
