"The nuanced appreciation for quantitative analysis which I developed on the Q-Step programme was a major influence on my post-university career choices."

Why did you choose the Q-Step programme as part of your degree?

I had developed a strong background in STEM subjects prior to University, and was on course to study a related field at degree level. However, as I became more curious about social theory and political science, I was drawn towards studying the social sciences - but maintained an appreciation for quantitative analysis. I therefore pursued the Q-Step programme as it bridged the gap between theory and quantitative analysis.

What was the highlight of the programme? What was the biggest challenge?

The highlight of the programme for me was the quantitative modules we’d take every year. As the majority of modules were focused on developing our data analysis skills and proficiency in R, each session provided valuable insight into the methods and techniques which enabled insightful analyses in a wide range of fields. Ultimately, I felt that applying these methods and techniques as part of my dissertation project was the perfect culmination of the teachings from the Q-Step programme.

How did your Q-Step experience influence your plans following graduation?

The nuanced appreciation for quantitative analysis which I developed on the Q-Step programme was a major influence on my post-university career choices. Specifically, I was interested in transferring those skills to the corporate world and applying them to draw insights from big data. Having started a role within a global professional services firm after graduating, I certainly feel as though my Q-Step training has prepared me well in that and many other respects.

What’s Next For You?

I’m fortunate to have reached this point in my career from the positive influences and role models that I’ve had throughout my education in London, from Primary School to University. Having retrospectively learnt a great deal about the social inequalities that I and many others faced throughout our education, I’m committed to participating in causes that seek to bring those issues to light and better serve poorer communities in London.
