Step 2: Your decision

Once you have received decisions from all the institutions you have applied to, UCAS will let you know the deadline to make your final choices.

Depending on the number of offers you have received, there will be three possible choices:

  • Firm
  • Insurance
  • Decline

Firm choice

The institution you accept as your Firm choice will be the one you commit to attending.

For example, if you are holding a conditional offer and you meet the conditions of your offer, you will be expected to enrol at your Firm choice institution.

By meeting the conditions of your firm choice, you will decline your insurance choice. You do not get to choose which institution you go to.

Insurance choice

Your Insurance choice is your back-up.

This will usually mean that the offer conditions are lower than that of your Firm choice.

If you miss the conditions of your Firm offer, but meet the lower conditions of your insurance choice, you will have a place at your Insurance choice in September.

By meeting the conditions of your firm choice, you will decline your insurance choice. You do not get to choose which institution you go to.

You do not have to make an insurance choice. However, you should be aware that after the 14 days following your replies, you will not be able to add one should you change your mind.

Read the guidance from UCAS

We recommend that you read the UCAS guidance on replying to your offers before you make your choices. UCAS has also put together a list of five important things to consider before you reply.
