As the environment, climate and energy rapidly rise up the public agenda, there is a growing need for highly qualified practitioners to analyse these complex issues and relate them to policy implications. UCL’s Economics and Policy of Energy and the Environment MSc trains students in the economics, policy and modelling skills needed to tackle global environmental challenges.
Modes and duration
Full-time students study for 37.5 hours per week during term time, with lectures and seminars held Monday-Friday in the morning and/or afternoon. Flexible mode students normally attend half this amount.

Normally a minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (economics, economics-plus, a science or engineering subject) or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard is required. A non-quantitative degree may, however, be considered provided that some aptitude, e.g. at A level, has been demonstrated for quantitative analysis. These requirements may be relaxed for mature students who can demonstrate aptitude and experience, for example, in business or government.
English language requirements
If your education has not been conducted in the English language, you will be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level of English proficiency.

About this degree
Students will gain a deep understanding of different economic and policy approaches to the urgent environmental and resource problems that face our global community, especially in respect to energy and climate change. You will learn how to apply a variety of analytical methods to resolve these problems, applied to a broad range of practical contexts.
Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.
The programme consists of five core modules (75 credits), three optional modules (45 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits).
Upon successful completion of 180 credits, you will be awarded a MSc in Economics and Policy of Energy and the Environment.

Compulsory modules are assessed through coursework, written and oral examinations. Planetary Economics and the Political Economy of Energy and Climate Change is assessed 100% by oral examination.

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words (60 credits).
Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and project work. Assessment is through examination, coursework and by dissertation.
