MSci Physics, 1st Year

To put it plain and simple, UCL is where I see myself achieving my dreams – graduating with a MSci Physics degree, pursuing my passion for research and making a place for myself in the STEM world. I was attracted to UCL because of the numerous opportunities available for just about any of my concerns. For instance, there is profound female empowerment in, not just the Physics and Astronomy Department, but in the Science faculties, as well. Career-wise, I am constantly reassured by the daily Careers Advice newsletter that I won’t be left out of the race for internships and landing the dream job after my degree. And, just wait till you see the Welcome Fair that is held during Fresher’s Week! You would be amazed by the 2-day exhibition of various clubs and societies, of all interests and disciplines! I have, personally, joined the Badminton and Volleyball Clubs, and the Engineering Society to both, broaden my horizons and achieve a balance in my routine.

Hailing from a small town in Malaysia, I had felt overwhelmed by the big city lights and the enormity of London City. But I am just grateful for all the support services UCL has to offer: from mental health and wellbeing services to student funding guidance, and academic assistance. Additionally, the campus is located centrally, with restaurants, shops, various modes of transportation, and cafes (a few of which are run by the Students’ Union at UCL) within a stone’s throw.

I was truly amazed by the endless events and activities organised during Induction Week. There were welcome parties hosted by UCL halls of residence, on-campus sales, clubbing and live music events, departmental induction events and even coffee socials that enabled me to get acquainted with my course mates. Trust me, I could not make up my mind on where to go!

During the first couple of weeks at UCL, the lectures have definitely been a wonderful start to my academic journey here. There are loads of resources online for just about any lecture, topic, or concern regarding the modules, and I definitely look forward to the lectures. My lecturers are also very cordial and helpful, making it easy to approach them during office hours for any question I might have.

All in all, I am in awe of the atmosphere here and I very much look forward to the rest of my journey at UCL.
