I appreciate that some of you have become aware of the recent article regarding Chris Backhouse. The contents of the article were very distressing. I, along with the entire HEP group, were truly shocked and deeply saddened to read of such inexcusable behaviours. We were unaware of the reported harassment prior to its public announcement. I can confirm that this individual resigned and left UCL in September 2022 and is no longer affiliated with UCL. I want to assure you that the department's resolve is to stand firmly against any forms of harassment, bullying and discrimination. We will continue to work and double the effort to improve the department's culture, while providing broad and individual support.
