Professor of Rheumatology
MediaCentral Widget Placeholderhttps://mediacentral.ucl.ac.uk/Player/1c0i7BD8Coziana Ciurtin is Professor of Rheumatology and Honorary Consultant in Adolescent and Adult Rheumatology at University College London. She completed her medical and specialty training in Bucharest (Romania) and been awarded an MRes and PhD from Carol Davila University of Medicine in Bucharest and another MSc from University of Oxford, UK. Coziana looks after adolescents and young people with rheumatic diseases, working across both the adolescent and adult rheumatology services. She is passionate about raising awareness of autoimmune rheumatic diseases and that can also affect children and adolescents (such as Childhood Sjӧgren), as well as identifying and tackling early the risk of irreversible complications associated with chronic inflammation (damage and cardiovascular risk), by working with young patients and patient charities to identify research questions relevant to them. She leads a research group at UCL interested in understanding how puberty and sex can affect the risk of developing lupus in adolescence and novel biomarker discoveries predictive of long-term outcomes, that can ultimately help us treat young people with rheumatic diseases better.
Coziana leads the research pilar of both the Lupus Working Party and Childhood Sjӧgren Interest Group of the Paediatric Rheumatology European Association (PReS) and has been appointed member of the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) Paediatric Committee and clinician representative on the Paediatric rheumatology | Versus Arthritis Clinical Studies Group and Autoimmune rheumatic diseases | Versus Arthritis Research Advisory Group. She is also Co-Vice Chair of the Barbara Ansell National Network for Adolescent Rheumatology (versusarthritis.org), paediatric representative of the Guidelines | British Society for Rheumatology Steering Group and Adolescent Health representative on the Paediatric Rheumatology CSAC | RCPCH. She is currently Deputy Head of the Department of Inflammation at UCL.
