MAPS Faculty launches new podcast on Ada Lovelace Day

9 October 2018

UCL Mathematical & Physical Sciences (MAPS) launches new podcast Hypot-enthuse with a special episode for Ada Lovelace Day, featuring UCL’s first female Head of Mathematics, Professor Helen Wilson.

Ada Lovelace

The podcast, called Hypot-enthuse, is a fun look at the interesting work and research coming out of MAPS. Each episode features a light hearted chat with a notable academic, and will examine exciting science topics making news around the world.

Professor Helen Wilson is a leader in her field, and speaks to the hosts about everything from her own career as a woman in STEM, the science behind chocolate fountains and why a day celebrating Ada Lovelace is important. Professor Wilson is interested in non-Newtonian fluids and as of September 2018 is UCL’s first ever female Head of Mathematics.

Ada Lovelace day is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). It takes place every year on the second Tuesday of October and it aims to improve the visibility of women in STEM and promote role models to encourage girls into STEM careers. It is named in memory of Ada Lovelace, the world’s first computer programmer. Ada Lovelace was educated in mathematics and science, unlike the majority of girls at that time, and her aptitude for the subject led her to contribute to work that was not fully understood until 100 years later, now considered to be the first computer programme.

Hosted by Sophie Lane and Laura Hewison from UCL, all episodes of Hypot-enthuse can be found on UCL SoundCloud.
