Sarah Elizabeth Ottley (née Young)

1748 - 1825

Biography

Mother and testator of Warner Ottley and William Young Ottley (both of whom q.v.), widow of Richard Ottley (q.v.) and daughter of Sir William Young 1st bart. (q.v.), and with William Young Ottley shown as the owner of 17 enslaved people on Antigua in the 1817 Slave Register for the island.

  1. Will of Sarah Elizabeth Ottley of the Island of St Vincent proved 22/04/1825. The will begins with a recital of her marriage settlement under which her 'dear father' Sir William Young of Delaford and her husband Richard Ottley each gave £10,000 (the former 'as my fortune') secured on their respective estates in the West Indies 'for the benefit of myself and any children I might have' but that in case of a son or sons the whole £20,000 should be allotted to the eldest of them', but with a power for Richard and Sarah Elizabeth Ottley to allot only £10,000 to the eldest son and the other £10,000 to their younger children. Accordingly, she allotted £10,000 to William Young Ottley, her eldest son, and the remaining £10,000 to her younger sons Richard, Brooke Taylor and Warner Ottley,'and to this my distribution my dear and eldest son has perfectly agreed.' She left to Warner Ottley the interest in part of her father's property to which she was entitled under the will of her sister Mrs Elizabeth Summers (q.v.), and made him her residual legatee.

  2. She appears to have died in London: the burial of Sarah Elizabeth Ottley is recorded at Westminster 22/03/1825.

NB Burke's 1832 Baronetage p. 355 'Young of Delaford' shows her erroneously as the daughter of Sir William Young second bart. [shown as born 1750, in fact 1749] but shows her correctly marrying Richard Ottley and dying in 1825, 'aged 77'.
