Elizabeth Summers formerly Hartley (née Young)

Mortgagee in St Vincent, daughter of Sir William Young 1st bart, (q.v.) and widow successively of James Hartley (q.v) and Robert Bertram Summers (q.v.).

1. Will of Elizabeth Summers widow of No. 70 Margaret Street Cavendish Square proved 06/03/1823. She expressed her wish to be buried with her grandfather Brooke Taylor at St Anns Church Soho or with her first husband and 'kind friend dear Mr Hartley' at St Andrew Holborn. In the will she rehearsed her entitlement to a moiety of a mortgage on property in Bequia, St Vincent 'at present In the possession of the Messrs Warners', which she left to be divided by her nephew Sir William Lawrence Young with his siblings Caroline Robson and George Young, and also his uncle John Young and the latter's wife Jane 'in consideration of sundry disappointments his said uncle John (my dear brother) has sustained in having the negroes to which he was entitled withheld from him.' The will shows her as part of a network of slave-owners in London. She gave personal mementoes and family objets to her sisters and to her brother John Young of Bath, including in the latter case a miniature of her first husband Mr Hartley by Sheriff 'with his hair at the back'; 'my miniature painted by Smart'; and a view of the old Bond estate on Antigua 'where our dear brother resided' with his grandmother when a child. She left to her nephew Sir William Lawrence Young 'the portrait of my late father his grandfather with his first wife, also the portraits of his late father and his aunt Mary Sewell in a gilt frame cut out of the family picture by Zophany'. Her nephew and co-trustee and co-executor was Warner Ottley (q.v.).
