Lister Prize Lecture

24 May 2023

We are pleased to share the recording of the Lister Prize Lecture given by Dr Khawaja at our institute last week.

Dr Anthony Khawaja and Lister Institute’s Chair Professor John Iredale

Dr Anthony Khawaja is Associate Professor at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology as well as Translational Data Science Theme Co-Lead at our NIHR Moorfields BRC.

Following the receipt of a Lister Research Prize Fellowship in 2022, Dr Khawaja gave a special lecture in our Lecture Theatre on 16 May. His talk titled "Genomics enabling personalised glaucoma care" described some of the work Dr Khawaja has already done in the field of glaucoma care with a view at what the Lister Institute Fellowship will enable him to achieve.

In his introduction, our Director Professor Andrew D Dick said:

What warms us is not only your academic credibility and prowess but your intense leadership ability. During your whole career you've been involved in young ophthalmologists' programmes, you've been absolutely a great pioneer of bringing people along, looking forward and to the future of clinical academia allowing people to understand the wonders of research.

The Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine was founded in 1891 and is one of the UK’s oldest medical charities. Originally a research institute developing, and subsequently producing on a commercial scale, vaccines and antitoxins, today it's a grant-giving charity whose principal award is the Lister Research Prize Fellowship.

Dr Khawaja shared his vision for the way in which this award may be used. He said:

I think actually it's appropriate that they've supported a body of work for glaucoma. Glaucoma is still a disease which you can't repair, so as you slowly lose vision you can't win it back so we need to prevent it. And that's early detection or early identification of those at high risk.
