Prof Jugnoo Rahi selected as one of 15 role models of women in academic medicine
8 March 2021
The British Medical Association’s Women in Academic Medicine Group has published a book of inspirational women to celebrate International Women’s Day 2021.
Prof Jugnoo Rahi is Professor of Ophthalmic Epidemiology and Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at GOS Institute of Child Health UCL and Institute of Ophthalmology UCL.
Prof Rahi has been included among the 15 women in a book celebrating achievements, career highs, great advice and opportunities. It offers readers an insight into the diverse and exciting world of medical academia. Each of the women highlighted have been nominated by one or more of their colleagues and mentees.
In nominating Prof Rahi, NIHR Clinician Scientist and Associate Professor Lola Solebo commented:
“Although Jugnoo has been my role model for scientific and clinical skills, I’ve valued her as a role model for more generic behaviours: professionalism, courtesy, and rigorous thinking. She has a sure moral compass.. which generates such respect and I and others have been truly lucky to have her as a role model” and Mariya Moosajee said “Jugnoo is an honest, strong, intelligent, wise, and caring leading clinician scientist. She is an amazing role model for early career clinical academics, and we need more junior individuals to follow in her footsteps.
IoO Prof Mariya Moosajee, also a nominator, said:
“Jugnoo is an honest, strong, intelligent, wise, and caring leading clinician scientist in the field of Paediatric Ophthalmology. I think she is an amazing role model for early career linical academics, and we need to improve her visibility to encourage more junior individuals to follow in her footsteps.
Prof Rahi said of the nomination:
“It is an honour to be part of this fantastic celebration of the power of role models. I am exceptionally fortunate to have had some amazing female and male mentors as my role models throughout my career - I consider myself to be part of an unstoppable ‘chain reaction’ for progress.
The MASC Women in Academic Medicine Group (WAM) will be holding a short celebration of women in academic medicine on 24 March at 1–2pm. To register your interest, email the committee secretariat at email@example.com.
