Welcome to the Clinical Observerships in Neurosurgery programme at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London. We offer a unique and enriching opportunity for current and aspiring neurosurgeons and medical professionals to immerse themselves in a world-class clinical environment. 

Our week-long observership programme is designed to provide unparalleled learning opportunities and clinical experience, enabling participants to learn from world-leading clinicians and witness cutting-edge neurosurgical procedures and techniques.

When are the next neurosurgery observership weeks?

Twice a year, we offer the opportunity for up to 5 individuals to come and visit as an observer for a 1 week period. The next observership week will be:

  • 13th-17th May 2024 (application deadline 13th Feb 2024)
  • 11th-15th November 2024  (application deadline 11th August 2024)

Who can apply?

To undertake the observership week applicants must be:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Existing neurosurgeons, or medically trained individuals including students who wish to pursue a career in Neurosurgery or an allied speciality

How to apply?

If you wish to apply for the observership week and you meet the above requirements please email ion.observership@ucl.ac.uk :

1. A copy of your recent CV (2 pages or less)

2. A covering letter explaining in 250 words or less why you wish to visit us and why you think the observership would be of value to you. 

3. Which observership dates you wish to visit (see above for options). Ensure you have submitted the application before the deadline. No exceptions will be made.

Please note that we receive a high volume of requests, selection is competitive and we are unable to accommodate all applicants.

What if I want to come at a different time to the specified observership weeks, or if I want to visit a specific surgeon?

We only accept applications for the observership weeks by this route.  

Do you offer any financial support for the visits?

In certain circumstances we may be able to provide limited support to facilitate a visit from an individual from a low or middle income country. This is not guaranteed. If required, please highlight this request in your application.
