Q&A with Zachery Spire

Zachery completed a PhD in Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE). He spoke to us about his course, his career goals and what it's like to move to London.

Why our PhD?

I wanted the opportunity to engage with a global group of colleagues from a variety of backgrounds and educational experiences. I felt my own experience would be enriched by exploring education in the ideas and identities of global citizens.

What were your first impressions of the IOE?

I really appreciated the warm and welcoming atmosphere of my peers, the administrators for my course, and student services staff. They continue to be incredibly supportive resources as I further my studies.

What is the best thing about your course?

The best thing about my programme is the people. My supervisor, peers, faculty, and staff remain the cornerstone of my experience at the IOE.

My biggest challenge? Trying to organise myself to get round all the discussion groups and opportunities for student engagement within the Institute.

What is the best thing about studying in London?

London is an amazingly diverse, culturally interesting, and enlightening space to explore yourself, your interests, and to launch into adventures throughout Europe.

What are your career goals?

Upon completing my PhD I hope to go on to a post-doctoral fellowship in educational policy work related to student housing accommodation.

Do you think studying at the IOE is a good investment?

I think any opportunity to do work you love, in a place you enjoy, with people whom you respect and who push your thinking forward is the best investment one can make.

Is there anything else you would like to say about your time at IOE?

I believe the IOE is the experience you make of it. The opportunity to incorporate social justice, self awareness, and develop critical thinking abound here. If you are looking to push the boundaries of your thinking in a place that is filled with self-motivated, passionate, intellectually curious people in every capacity, I highly recommend considering the IOE.
