31 May 2017

BBC 1 documentary, 'The Truth About HIV' looks at the science behind the virus.

Dr Chris van Tulleken and Professor Greg Towers

The Truth About HIV, a BBC1 documentary featuring interviews with Professor Greg Towers, Professor Deenan Pillay (AHRI), Professor Sheena McCormack (UCL MRC CTU) and Dr Stephane Hue (LSHTM), aired last week on Thursday 25 May.

The documentary, presented by Dr Chris van Tulleken, looks at the science behind the virus as well as cutting edge drug therapy that can potentially keep the virus at bay.

In the programme Chris also speaks to Sir Elton John and HRH Prince Harry, meets patients diagnosed with the disease, and looks in to the controversy around the rollout of PrEP, anti-HIV medication that keeps HIV negative people from becoming infected.

Chris also visits a clinic in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where tens of thousands are still dying. He meets an infected schoolgirl and realises that local attitudes to testing are still leading to unnecessary deaths.
