About iReadMore

Who is iReadMore for?

iReadMore is a therapy for individuals with acquired reading impairments (known as pure alexia, central alexia or aphasia).

Reading impairments can be acquired after a stroke, brain injury, brain tumour or certain neurodegenerative disorders (such as primary progressive aphasia).

iReadMore is NOT designed to treat reading disorders that started in childhood (such as developmental dyslexia) or visual reading disorders (such as hemianopia or visual neglect).

How does iReadMore work?

iReadMore uses repetition training to rebuild associations between spoken words, pictures and written words to improve reading speed and accuracy.

The training adapts to the user's performance which makes it suitable for different types and severities of reading impairments.

Improvement in reading abilities will be specific to words that are trained in the app and not untrained words.

Has research on iReadMore been published in peer-reviewed academic journals?

A number of research papers on iReadMore have been published in peer-reviewed academic journals. Research on iReadMore is continuing to further develop the therapy and improve our understanding of reading rehabilitation.

How much will my reading improve?

We cannot say exactly how much you will improve as results will vary.

In a clinical trial, people with central alexia who used iReadMore for 35 hours over 4 weeks improved their word reading accuracy by 8.7% on average, and their reading speed got faster by 100ms.

How was iReadMore developed?

iReadMore was developed by a team of researchers at UCL in collaboration with software development company, Quiley Ltd.

People with aphasia have been acitvely involved in all stages of the research and development, including designing the app to ensure it is accessible and engaging.

This work was funded by the Medical Research Council (grant codes: MR/K022563/1 and MR/R015759/1) and UKRI (KEI2019-06-01).
