General information about clinical staff roles.
- Consultant Clinical Academics
The definition of a Consultant Clinical Academic (CCA) is those staff who:
- Hold a substantive academic contract of employment with an HEI and
- Are required, as a condition of their employment to hold GMC or GDC registration and
- Where relevant, holds a licence to practice
They will also have been:
- Awarded their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT)
- Appointed via an Advisory Appointments Committee (AAC) and awarded Honorary Consultant status by the NHS
- Issued with a signed off and agreed job plan
- Issued with an honorary clinical contract which will be interdependent to the substantive contract
- Awarded open ended funding on the post
Pay scales
The staff who meet the above criteria should be paid on the CCA pay scale (annex A or B) and will be employed on the terms and conditions as set out below. Information on the Consultant Clinical Academic pay can be found on the pay scale page.

Consultant Clinical Academic Staff conditions:
Clinical Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, Clinical Lecturer.Research and Teaching Staff conditions (40 hours/week):
Professorial Clinical Research Fellow, Principal Clinical Research Fellow, Clinical Associate Professor (Teaching) and Clinical Professor (Teaching).
- Senior Academic GP (SAGP)
The definition of a Senior Academic GP (SAGP) is those staff who:
- Have been awarded their GP status and are undertaking practice commitments
- Have achieved a minimum of Senior Lecturer or equivalent researcher status
- Been awarded an NHS honorary contract
- Issued with a signed off and agreed job plan

Consultant Clinical Academic Staff conditions:
Clinical Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, Clinical Lecturer.Research and Teaching Staff conditions (40 hours/week):
Professorial Clinical Research Fellow, Principal Clinical Research Fellow, Clinical Associate Professor (Teaching) and Clinical Professor (Teaching).
- Dental Consultant Clinical Academics
The definition of a Dental Consultant is those staff who:
- Been awarded their Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training
- Have achieved a minimum of Senior Lecturer or equivalent researcher status
- Have been appointed via an NHS Advisory Appointments Committee (AAC) and been awarded Honorary Consultant status by the NHS.
- Signed off an agreed job plan.

Consultant Clinical Academic Staff conditions:
Clinical Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, Clinical Lecturer.Research and Teaching Staff conditions (40 hours/week):
Professorial Clinical Research Fellow, Principal Clinical Research Fellow, Clinical Associate Professor (Teaching) and Clinical Professor (Teaching).
- Clinical Staff (non-consultant and non NTN)
Non-consultant grade clinical roles, or individuals who are not consultants (have not achieved CCT) and who are also not undergoing specialty training. They may be in teaching or research positions, and must be jointly employed and deliver clinical activity as part of their role. They work 36.5 hours per week.
Research terms in most cases, academic terms only by exception.
