Paying into a UK Bank Account

Payroll Services will pay your salary into a UK bank account or building society. We are currently unable to make electronic payments overseas so you are required to set up a UK bank account for this purpose. To facilitate this, we offer a bank introductory letter.

  • Bank Accounts The UCL payroll system can only accept bank accounts with a 6 digit sort code and an 8 digit account number. The only exceptions being Lloyds Bank which has a 7 digit account number and Girobank which has a 9 digit account number.

  • Building Society Accounts  The UCL payroll system can only accept building society accounts with a 6 digit sort code and an 8 digit account number. If you have a savings account you will need to quote a roll/ reference number as well as the 6 digit sort code and 8 digit account number. Please note that some building societies may take longer to credit your account.

If you are an Overseas Nationals, please see Opening a UK Bank Account below.

Opening a UK Bank Account

UCL and Santander Universities are pleased to confirm a partnership that enables all UCL employees to quickly and easily open a UK bank account.  The account can be opened through the dedicated Santander Universities Branch on the Gower Street Campus in the Wilkins Building, or alternatively at the Tottenham Court Road branch around the corner.

If you wish to open a UK bank account with Santander using this service, please first request a bank reference letter from your Employment Contract Administration (ECA) team. To open your bank account you need the following three documents:

  • EU Nationals require their passport or EU Identity Card, and Non-EU Nationals require British Residency Permit card or valid visa in passport.

  • Proof of your address - this could include a tenancy agreement for a rented property, a utility bill, or a confirmation of National Insurance letter sent to your address in London.

  • UCL reference letter containing -
    • Your full name, identical to how it shows on your passport/ Residency Permit
    • Your current London address
    • employment start date, and contract end date (if applicable)

Upon receipt of these documents, Santander will be able to arrange an appointment to open an account for you in the branch.
