Call for expressions of interest to join the organising committee for BioMedEng 2022

3 March 2021

Help us shape the UK’s largest annual conference in biomedical engineering, BioMedEng

UCL portico

UCL is hosting the BioMedEng 2022 conference between UCL Engineering and UCL Medical Sciences, under the umbrella of the Institute of Healthcare Engineering. It will run across two days on Thursday 8 September-Friday 9 September 2022, including plenary sessions, keynote talks, break-out workshops, poster sessions and more.

Prof Vanessa Diaz (UCL Mechanical Engineering) and Prof Rui Loureiro (UCL Aspire CREATe) the Chair and Co-Chair will host the conference alongside an interdisciplinary team of engineers, clinicians and scientists from across UCL.

The conference will include both in-person and virtual components and will have a focus on collaborative openness and inclusivity. It is an exciting opportunity to showcase research and increase partnerships with academia, healthcare and industry sectors as well as patient groups across the UK and beyond. There will be dedicated early-career researcher sessions and other opportunities to support early-career growth.

Organising committee

We are actively seeking expressions of interest to join our organising committee. This committee will play a key role in shaping the format, ethos and reach of the conference.

We are looking for enthusiastic colleagues and PhD students from all over UCL that have Biomedical Engineering/Healthcare Engineering links and we cannot stress this enough: everyone is invited to submit an expression of interest.

The committee will initially meet monthly to shape the scientific, social, student competition, sponsorship and exhibition programmes.

Who can apply to join?

Our organising committee should be a reflection of the diversity of UCL, including our people, disciplines, career stages, backgrounds and different Departments/Faculties that make UCL’s biomedical engineering community so strong.

We welcome expressions of interest from any UCL academic and research staff and PhD students whose research is related to bioengineering/biomedical engineering/healthcare engineering.

We will do our absolute best to have an inclusive and balanced committee. We are really looking forward to hearing from you!

OK! how can I apply?

It is all very simple and it will take you 10 minutes of your time. Please send us a short email to healthcare-eng@ucl.ac.uk with the subject heading ‘BioMedEng 2022 committee’ containing:

  • Name
  • Department
  • Career stage
  • Short statement of interest with your motivation to join and what you would bring to the committee (max 100 words)

Deadline for expression of interest

24 March 2021

How else can I be involved?

If the interest is as high as expected, it is inevitable that not all applications will make it to the organising committee. However, we are absolutely committed to make this an opportunity for everyone to participate. There will be further opportunities for involvement later including a call for workshops, papers and, of course, attending the conference itself. More details on these will be released over the coming months.

Communications and events professionals

We are also actively seeking to grow the committee of communications and events professionals involved in shaping the BioMedEng conference. If your Centre, Department or Faculty has research related to healthcare engineering, please contact Georgie Cade, g.cade@ucl.ac.uk to find out more about how to get involved. The conference will be an excellent opportunity to increase your area’s exposure and collaborations across industry and academia.
