Placements & Journal Club

Placements

As part of MSc Health Psychology training, we are keen to provide students with placements to gain work experience in relevant healthcare, clinical or academic settings. The aim is to give a sense of the likely tasks and work environment that a recent MSc graduate would encounter in clinical, academic, or related settings. We expect students to work independently and thus gain experience of the day-to-day work in a given placement. Examples of previous placement providers include Cancer Research UK, Department of Health, Atlantis Healthcare, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Public Health England, Change4Life and Headspace. A list of placements is released by the MSc team and students are invited to submit their top choices. They are then put in touch with at least one of their choices of the placements to go through an interview process.

Journal clubs

The MSc runs a weekly journal club and full-time and first year part-time students are required to attend on a weekly basis. The journal club aims to teach you to be critical, reflective enquirers.  Facilitated by a member of staff associated with the course, two students will present a paper selected on the basis of its relevance to the content of one of the lectures being delivered in that week. You are asked to consider the merits and limitations of the paper and to involve the whole cohort in a group discussion. You will be provided with the paper one week in advance of each journal club session. The journal club runs throughout the first two academic terms and papers will be selected which relate to topics from each of the eight modules.
