On March 28, 2023, AstroNoir and the UCL Earth Sciences Ethnic Diversity Network joined forces to host the first Mindful Scholar Event. This thought-provoking gathering brought together a diverse group of eight individuals from various backgrounds, including students, professors, and industrial professionals.

During the event, we explored the importance of mental health and well-being in academia, and the significance of representation within the scientific community. In an informal setting, we shared personal experiences in terms of mental health during and after the pandemic, and as in the context of other work-related and life-related factors. Sharing these stories with each other was a really helpful and insightful experience for all participants.

Building on this success, we are delighted to announce an ongoing collaboration between AstroNoir and the EDI network of UCL Earth Sciences, with a series of events planned throughout the year.

Reflecting on the Mindful Scholar Event

We prioritized creating a safe and inclusive space by respecting participants' privacy, and therefore, no photography was conducted. Participants engaged in enlightening discussions, sharing their experiences, challenges, and ideas for promoting a more open, supportive and equitable environment. The Mindful Scholar Event reaffirmed our shared commitment to fostering inclusivity and embracing diversity within the STEAM community. Indeed, a mindful culture in academia will benefit diversity and inclusion by critically offsetting the burden of stressful challenges, some of which are specifically faced by underrepresented groups, as well as hopefully fostering a sense of belonging.

Embracing Collaboration for Change

In light of the Mindful Scholar Event's success, AstroNoir and Earth Science’s EDI network are excited to announce an ongoing collaboration. Together, we will organize a series of inclusive events throughout the year, providing opportunities for meaningful conversations, networking, and knowledge sharing. By combining our efforts, we aim to effect positive change within the scientific community and create an environment that promotes mental health and wellbeing, as well as celebrates and amplifies diverse perspectives. The 2nd event took place on June 9th, 2023 (after the editorial deadline of this newsletter), and further events are planned in the next academic year.

Join Our Inclusive Community

AstroNoir and the UCL Earth Sciences EDI Network extend an invitation to scientists, researchers, students, and professionals from all backgrounds to join our vibrant and inclusive communities.

True progress is achieved through open and collective effort of individuals with broad and diverse skills, perspectives and experiences. By embracing collaboration, we can foster innovative ideas, encourage inclusivity, and drive positive change within the scientific landscape.
