Annual Leave

Your rights to your annual leave as a doctoral student

How Much Leave Can I take?

In line with staff, doctoral students can take 27 days of annual leave plus six closure days (at Christmas and Easter) as well as statutory holidays. For part-time students this is pro-rated. You can find these closure days listed on the Student Life page. We recommend you take advantage of your annual leave, as finding a work-life balance is important.

How Do I Register My Leave?

You are encouraged to discuss and agree your leave entitlements either at the start of each academic session or as required in your supervision meetings. You should provide reasonable notice, ensure that the timing of your leave fits with the project timeline, and is in keeping with the funding body regulations / requirements (where relevant).

If you are an international student on a Student Visa, you are also entitled to the same annual leave stipulations. However, you are not permitted to be away from UCL for more than 60 days in any single period of leave. For further advice and information, please consult the Immigration and Visa webpage.

If you have any queries for taking annual leave (whether for vacation or other reasons), you should discuss them with your supervisor and DGT. Further information about sick leave and parental leave can be found here.
