Future of the Monarchy

The Prince of Wales and Joe Biden walking past a body of water.

In 2016, the Constitution Unit published The Queen at 90 The Changing Role of the Monarchy, and Future Challenges, examining how Elizabeth II's reign saw a significant reduction in her personal prerogative power, but with no reduction in the monarch’s ceremonial functions.

Bob Morris also wrote a chapter in Constitutional Futures Revisited, edited by Robert Hazell, on the future reign of Charles III, which touched on similar issues in 2008.

This set the scene for two new projects: on accession and coronation, looking in particular at the accession and coronation oaths, and a comparative study of the other monarchies of western Europe, their changing role and functions and the challenges they all face.
