Our Professional Services and Technical Team manages a wide range of areas including teaching administration, technical, finance, research, HR and communications.

Kati Massey

Department Manager

Responsibilities

Kati works in partnership with the Head of the Department to ensure the practical and strategic needs of the department are met. On a day-to-day basis, this means making sure that everything within the PS team runs smoothly.

 


Susie Emmett

Executive Assistant (Head of Department)

Responsibilities

Susie is responsible for managing the diary of Jose Torero and is the main point of contact for meetings related to him. Contact Susie to:

For all enquiries relating to ensuring the building and facilities operate smoothly and also supporting the wider estates function of the department. Contact us for:

Rodrigo Martins

STaffing and operations administrator

Responsibilities

Rodrigo supports elements of the HR and purchasing function as well as some front office duties.

  • Arrange courier and mail deliveries

  • Arranging visitor access to the building

Roelle Santa Maria

Engagement & Communications Manager

Responsibilities

Roelle is in charge of communications and marketing provision for the department, including social media, content creation, events, and research dissemination, and provides GDPR, copyright, and CMA compliance advice as well as some website maintenance and development.


Simon Justin

IT Support

Responsibilities

Simon supports all departmental IT systems and resources (IT equipment and software procurement and customisation, local network and firewall administration, user desktop support, etc.) as well as backup support of centrally-provided IT resources (email, printers, teaching clusters, research computing, etc.).

Mark Fairweather

Teaching & Learning manager

Responsibilities

Mark supports general teaching and learning in the department, with particular emphasis on MSc programmes.


Indra Mitra-Duggan

Responsibilities

Indra acts as the Student Adviser for Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (CEGE) and is here for you as a key point of contact during your first undergraduate year.


Ewa Kedzierska

Senior Teaching & Learning Administrator (undergraduate)

Responsibilities

Ewa is responsible for all matters relating to undergraduates' teaching and learning activities. These include teaching and learning support for UG students' lifecycle, including timetabling, induction, coursework submission, engagement monitoring, student records and student communication. 


Pavlina Pyari

Senior Teaching & Learning Administrator (postgraduate)

Responsibilities

Pavlina deals with Extenuating Circumstances applications and acts as a secretary to the EC panel. She supports MSc Transport, MRes and deals with all PG new students’ queries.

Lloyd Boman

Senior Teaching & Learning Administrator (postgraduate reseaRch and undergraduate)

Responsibilities

Lloyd supports the postgraduate research students including working with the Scholarship Committee. He also provides support to the wider teaching and learning team.

Mala Leicester

Senior Staffing Officer

Responsibilities

Mala looks after all elements of HR for the department. This includes helping you recruit new or temporary staff, providing advice on general HR policies such as induction, probation and appraisal, and providing support around the HR systems (MyHR). She also works in partnership with the Director of Research on the Promotions Committee. Contact Mala for:

Tristan Cardwell

Senior Research Officer

Responsibilities

Tristan is esponsible for costing research proposals and seeking UCL approval on new research proposals. Liaising with UCL central teams including research services, research contracts and post-award finance to achieve the timely set up of successful awards and the approval of contracts for research funding. Monitoring research expenditure within the department and liaising with Principal Investigators to ensure funding and project resources are allocated effectively

 


Julija Melesko

Senior Finance and Resources Manager

Responsibilities

Julija supports staff with issues related to finance. This includes queries regarding financial policies & systems, purchasing, expense claims, invoicing, individual project balances, budgets and transactions.

 


Elmira Barysevich

Elmira supports the finance, HR and research finance team. 

 

 


Ramya Venkataraman

 Responsibilities

The ICEC-MCM Project Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operational aspects of the UKRI Interdisciplinary Circular Economy Centre for Mineral-based Construction Materials and works closely with the project team to coordinate, monitor and facilitate the research and outreach activities. She liaises and maintains relationships with industry and government stakeholders while also looking for new collaboration opportunities.

UKCRIC Communications Manager

Responsibilities

Tim is responsible for the Marketing, Communications and Events activities of the UK Collaboratorium for Research on Infrastructure and Cities (UKCRIC).

Les Irwin

Responsibilities

Les is the technical services lead and is responsible for the management, development and strategic planning of all technical resources and technical service delivery within the department, across all sites - working in partnership with the Head of Department.

He also manages the technical infrastructure across the departments laboratories and Prototype, Development & Fabrication Facility.

 


Dr Melisa Canales

Research Technician

Responsibilities

Melisa is the lead technician for the Healthy Infrastructure Research Group (HIRG) laboratory within the Chadwick building and facilitates the effective and efficient day-to-day running of the laboratory.


Keith Harvey

Departmental Safety Officer

Responsibilities

As Departmental Safety Officer, Keith is responsible for the health and safety within the department.

 

 


Raman Mangabhai

MATERIALS TECHNICIAN

Responsibilities

Raman is a concrete technologist and supports academic research and teaching within the Advanced Materials Laboratory.

Abishera provides technical support to research and teaching and facilitates the effective and efficient day-to-day running of the structural and environmental laboratory and other flexible project spaces at UCL, Here East campus.

Charles provides technical support to research and teaching activities including the surgical robot vision, UCL autonomous manufacturing research labs and large volume robotics.

Responsibilities

Shi Shi is the lead technician in the Advanced Materials laboratory and supports academic research and teaching within the Materials Laboratory. She facilitates the effective and efficient day-to-day running of the laboratory.

 


Rebekah Smith

Metrology Technician Apprentice

Responsibilities

Rebekah is a metrology technician apprentice in the Robotics laboratory and supports the needs of the robotics, manufacturing and fabrication spaces at UCL HereEast.

 


Dr Utku Solpuker

Laboratory Technician

Responsibilities

Utku supports academic research and teaching within the Environmental laboratories.

 


Charlie Waller

Mechanical Workshop Technician

Responsibilities

Charlie works within the Prototype, Development & Fabrication Facility supporting research and teaching activity. Design and manufacturing bespoke novel scientific devices.

 


Matthew Wilkinson

Matt is the lead technician for the Geotechnics Laboratory and within the Prototype, Development & Fabrication Facility supporting research and teaching activity. Dr Judith Zhou

Environmental Laboratories Manager/ Departmental Chemical Protection Officer

Responsibilities

Judith is the lead technician for the Environmental laboratory within the Chadwick building supporting academic research and teaching and facilitates the effective and efficient day-to-day running of the laboratory. Judith is the Department's chemical protection officer.

 

 

 

 Person Environment Activity Research Laboratory (PEARL)

Beky Stoddart

PEARL Technical Services Manager

Responsibilities

Beky is a multi-skilled technician specializing in lighting, production and CAD. Beky has a background in theatre, opera, dance and theatre consultancy. Beky works closely with experiment leads to research, develop and mount experiments within the PEARL laboratory, as well as providing technical support for events and hires.

 

 


Ben Paveley 

PEARL TechnicIAN (SOUND)

Responsibilities

Ben works with the Sound and Acoustics team and providing technical support and assistance to all PEARL facility users.

 

 


Shane Gill

pearl TECHNICIAN (MAKING AND PRODUCTION)

Responsibilities

Responsible for providing technical support and assistance to all PEARL facility users as a member of the PEARL Making and Productions Teams. Assisting Specialists within the team; including sound, lighting, AV, and construction of sets for experiments. Specialising in programming Arduinos, Raspberry Pi’s and Python. Responsible for data acquisition in experiments. 


Steve Mayo

PEARL Technician - Specialist Lead (sound) 

Responsibilities

As the Specialist Lead for Sound at PEARL, Steve is responsible for the implementation, running and maintenance of the audio systems that are used for experiments within the Main Lab Space and Vibe sound preparation room. This comprises design (conceptual, scientific and/or artistic), field recording, rigging, programming and problem-solving experiments. 

 


Ralph Stokeld

PEARL technician – Specialist lead (Lighting/video)

Responsibilities

As the Specialist Lead for Lighting and Video at PEARL, Ralph is responsible for the implementation, running and maintenance of the visual elements and systems that will be used in experiments within the Main Lab Space. Across Lighting this comprises design, rigging, programming and problem-solving and within Video includes composition, capture and editing.

 


Ayako Suzuki

PEARL technician – Specialist lead (Instrumentation)

Responsibilities

As a Lead Technician at PEARL, Ayako is mainly responsible for some instrumentation management and data analysis including code writing (mainly in Matlab). Currently interested in eye trackers, fNIRS and OAE (otoacoustic emissions) devices.


Tatsuto Suzuki

PEARL technician – Specialist lead (Programming)

Responsibilities

As a PEARL technician – Specialist lead (Programming), Tatsuto's work mainly focuses on research/experiment design, data collection from measurement systems, data analysis, and writing reports for PEARL research including UCL student projects.


Matthew Vile

pearl TECHNICIAN (MAKING AND PRODUCTION)

Responsibilities

Matthew is responsible for providing technical support and assistance to all PEARL facility users as a member of the PEARL Making and Productions Teams. Assisting Specialists within the team; including sound, lighting, AV, and construction of sets for experiments. Responsible for safety adherence and supervision of users.

 

  Partnerships and Operation

Barbara Pizzileo

PEARL Strategic Partnerships and Operations Manager

Responsibilities

Barbara is responsible for the operation managment within PEARL and developing partnerships with universities, charities and industry. She also leads the Enabling Team, which consists of the community partnerships manager, the community engagement assistants and the research business manager.


Helen King

PEARL Community Partnerships and Engagement Manager

Responsibilities

Helen manages the PEARL Community Partnerships and Engagement Team to work with the local community, schools and various priority groups based on our experiments. Our main aim is to share our knowledge, resources, and opportunities with the wider community. We work as a team to develop community research, education, engagement and co-creation projects with individuals, external partners, and stakeholders.


Derrick Boampong

PEARL Research Manager

Responsibilities

Derrick collaborates with researchers from various backgrounds who want to use the PEARL experimental facilities, schedule research activities and enable the provision of a high-quality scientific environment for research work. He also manages the administration of ethics applications and data archives for research activities at PEARL and helps promote the laboratory as a unique world leader in human-environment interactions research. Derrick is also responsible for the purchasing of laboratory and workshop equipment and consumables.


David Kwakye

PEARL Community Partnerships and Engagement Representative

Responsibilities

As a Community Partnerships and Engagement Representative, David helps with linking PEARL to the community, particularly creating awareness of PEARL and what it does, especially with regard to experiments. David is also responsible for helping with administrative duties.


Nikolaos Papadosifos

DEPUTY SAFETY OFFICER AND BUILDING MANAGEMENT

Responsibilities

As CEGE deputy Safety Officer, Nikolaos is responsible for all of UCL's best Health & Safety practices are applied. Nikolaos looks after the maintenance operations of PEARL'S building infrastructure and takes care that UCL Security applications are active and in place for the facility. Lastly, Nikolaos ensures that all the GDPR practices are in place.


Craig Smith

PEARL Community Partnerships and Engagement Representative

Responsibilities

As a Community Partnership and Engagement Representatives at PEARL, Craig is responsible for developing and executing multi-faceted projects with varied stakeholders and organisations that build and strengthen ties with the community and beyond. Craig manages various aspects of experiments and engagement projects, building events programmes and recruiting research participants.


Janette Yacoub

Responsibilities

Janette manages Nick Tyler’s diary and arranges meetings related to CTS/book PEARL’s visits.
