Research summary
Dr. Tohid Erfani is Associate Professor at the department of civil and environmental Engineering. He is interested in environmental resource management, green and sustainable planning, and water and energy infrastructure expansion under uncertainty. His research is focused on applying system perspective approaches for sustainable, resilient and efficient solution under extreme events. He uses operational research approaches, system dynamics, evolutionary based optimisation algorithms and agent based modelling for capacity expansion, water-energy-food-climate nexus, transport and logistics, water market design and trade. His work is funded by water companies, regulators, research institutes and UK research councils where he acts as modeller and advisers.
Tohid leads a project in collaboration with Thames Water on real options decision making. He also leads UCL's modelling research in the £8M Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) grant with the focus on water, energy, food and climate challenges faced in Africa, Middle East and South east Asia.
Teaching summary
Dr. Tohid Erfani is Module Coordinator for CEGEG134 and CEGEM134 course on Environmental Modelling. He covers theoretical introduction and practical experience in modelling and management of environmental engineering systems. The course introduces system dynamics, mathematical model building, optimisation, decision theory under uncertainty and problem solving from nature. These are used for supporting decision making in environmental systems such as water, climate, air, food and energy.
He also coordinate (with Dr Beatrice Baudet), the Scenario G (CEGE301P:Scen) where it includes activities that combines issues of flood risk management and environmental impact with structural and geotechnical design.
