Research shortlist: Collapse analysis, plasticity theory, suspended and ground bearing reinforced concrete slabs, membrane action, residual strength of damaged reinforced concrete elements, serviceability limit state of columns and cable stayed bridge decks.
Teaching summary
Teaching shortlist: The following is a record of my general responsibilities up to my retirement in September 2012: I handled design in first year which was there to exercise inventiveness, creativity, innovation, flexible and analytical thinking and drawn communication.
In fourth year I handled the integrated design course. This was for students to demonstrate first their design skills whilst accepting individual responsibility for a single engineering discipline in a team design for a major infrastructure project. Secondly the course was an opportunity to demonstrate their skill in pioneering, managing and presenting effectively a project with important environmental and social responsibilities. These goals are still maintained in the Department.

Biography
I am an architect, an engineer and an 'academic' and have two interests in my work:
- helping student engineers to realize their design potential,
- the use of the mind and hand drawing in both design and structural engineering research.
Joined UCL in September 1987, Head of Structures 1992-2004, Head of Design 2004-2012, before 1987 the career steps were
design structural engineer with Ove Arup & Partners (1972 - 1975), architect with John R Harris Architects (1975 - 1980), research student at UCL (1980 - 1983), research assistant at UCL (1983 - 1985) and research engineer with Taylor Woodrow (1985 - 1987).
