HSA Group establishes new scholarship to support Yemeni students

20 March 2024

A new philanthropic partnership between UCL and the Hayel Saeed Anam (HSA) Group provides support to Yemeni students based within the Faculty of Engineering Sciences.

The Hayel Saeed Anam Group Scholarship is supporting a student from Yemen to undertake an MSc in Engineering for International Development. The scholarship fully covers tuition fees and contributes towards the student’s living costs.

This dynamic programme cultivates adept professionals capable of constructing resilient infrastructure to help combat poverty in low to middle-income nations. Graduates are equipped to confront poverty challenges head-on, carving a sustainable and impactful trajectory on a worldwide canvas.

Each year, the course attracts a high volume of talented international applicants. However, some will face significant financial barriers to undertaking their studies at UCL, and this vital scholarship seeks to change the trajectory for students from Yemen

“Scholarships are critical to enabling those who have the talent, but not the resources, to come to UCL,” said Prof Nigel Titchener-Hooker, Dean of UCL Faculty of Engineering Sciences. “The effect of the Hayel Saeed Anam Group’s support is transformational for students, their families, and also for UCL and the world it seeks to impact.”

Abdul Gabbar Hayel Saeed, chairman and CEO of the Hayel Saeed Anam Group, said: “We are pleased to partner with UCL to help nurture and develop the next generation of engineering leaders from Yemen.

‘‘The country has a young population, with over half of Yemenis under twenty-one. These young people face many challenges, including a lack of access to education. We believe that skills learned today by the next generation of Yemeni leaders will be critical to achieving sustainable social and economic development in Yemen.

“As the largest private company in Yemen, we are committed to investing in education and look forward to continue supporting and delivering education programmes in collaboration with UCL and other leading international universities to improve social mobility in fragile and conflict affected states.”

As one of the world’s top 10 universities (2024 QS World University Rankings), UCL is a place for people who want to invest in building a better future. Our students represent that future: the innovators and critical thinkers that society needs to meet 21st century problems.

We are grateful to HSA Group for their philanthropic support, and to all donors who share our belief that who you are and where you come from should not be a barrier to a UCL education.
