On 24 October, Professor Abel Nyamapfene presented his Professorial Inaugural Lecture, ‘Explorations in Learning and Teaching: Going beyond Education’ at UCL– the fourth in a series of Professorial Inaugural Lectures that celebrate the careers of education-focused staff and launched at the end of 2022.
Professor Abel Nyamapfene is an experienced engineering education leader. He has extensive module and programme leadership experience acquired from six universities across Africa and the UK, and he has led the introduction of two very successful academic programmes, namely the UCL MSc Engineering & Education, and the Catholic University of Zimbabwe (CUZ) flagship programme - the Bachelor of Business Management and Information Technology Honours Degree. He is a founding member of the UCL Integrated Engineering Programme (IEP), the award-winning teaching and learning framework underpinning the majority of UCL undergraduate engineering programmes.
In this lecture, Abel told an engaging story of his personal experiences as a learner and a teacher, and shed light on possibilities and futures for higher education. He also speaks on his involvement in the Integrated Engineering Programme, where modules have been deliberately designed to provide students with authentic learning experiences that enable them to connect theory and practice within a collaborative, interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary environment.
The session was introduced by Professor Emanuela Tilley, Director of Studies, Integrated Engineering Programme, and the UCL Centre for Engineering Education, and closed by Associate Professor Kate Roach, of the Integrated Engineering Programme.
