Using Student Union Societies to Launch Your Career
Read about how your potential involvement in a society can accelerate your media career pursuits.
9 October 2023
Joining one of the great media societies at UCL Student Union could be a fantastic way to launch your career while you’re still studying. Find out more at our online event From Campus to Career: Using SU Societies to launch your Media career on Tuesday 17th October, 12.30-2.00pm on Teams, for a chance to learn more including the opportunity to join up.
Developing Skills and Contacts
Participating in a media society will give you a set of skills you’ll be able to highlight on your CV to prospective employers, from highly-sought after soft skills such as communication, teamwork and leadership, to tangible hard skills such as being an expert in video editing software, Adobe, HTML, or driving a radio desk. Having a set of skills you can easily demonstrate (with passion) to employers gives you a huge leg up in applications and interviews. If you’re a writer, artist, budding presenter or marketing genius, you’ll also be able to build up a portfolio of your work to present to prospective employers.
You’ll also be making connections with fellow students (your future colleagues, don’t forget) and professionals in the media sector, which is a great advantage for job hunting and networking. These contacts can be particularly useful in an industry which has a higher-than-average proportion of freelance work, so having an abundance of connections across the sector can only be an advantage when it comes to securing contracts.
The Event
We’ll start with panellists from several societies talking about what their society does, how you can get involved, and the skills and advantages that participation can bring you. There will then be time to chat to representatives in break-out rooms, and to sign up to the societies that excite you the most.
Speakers are still in the process of being finalised, but will updated on the booking site.
Sign up through your MyUCLCareers account to join us on Tuesday 17th October, 12.30-2pm via Teams.
