Division of Psychology and Language Sciences celebrates 2022 graduates

1 September 2022

Congratulations to all students from the Division of Psychology and Language Sciences (PALS) who graduated this week.

Christine Ohuruogo

UCL’s graduation ceremonies provide a special opportunity to celebrate the hard work and achievements of our students.

Speaking at this year’s ceremony was former Olympic, World and Commonwealth 400m champion and PALS alumna Christine Ohuruogu MBE. Christine graduated in Phonetics and Linguistics in 2005 and went on to compete as an athlete for Great Britain in four Olympic games. Last year she became a member of UCL’s Council.

Christine said: “For all of you who are here today, be really proud of your achievements, be proud of each other, you have shown great resilience and commitment to your studies and I know that with this strength of attitude and character, outstanding endeavours will await you."

Commenting on her own time at UCL, she said: "What I loved about my time at UCL was that everyone was so different, everyone came from different walks of life, were diverse in their expression of themselves and their talents, yet here we all were, ready to take on the world and make changes for good as students of UCL."

She added: "It was at that time I decided I would seize the opportunity that presented itself and I would aim to win gold at the Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2006. That win in Australia was to by my first major championship win and it was a catalyst for the many successes that followed in my career."

In her final advice to the class of 2022 she said: "As I stand here, I would encourage you to be open to those opportunities that present themselves to you as you begin the next stage of your journey. Our world is in constant flux, so keep your eyes open, your minds sharp and use experiences from your time at UCL to propel you into aiming higher. Hold your head high and reach out for those opportunities, confidently knowing that as a graduate of UCL you will have everything you need to make a bold and memorable impact."
