The two-year pre-registration course, taking in its first cohort in September 2021, will provide an alternative, accelerated route into Orthoptics for graduates in relevant subjects.  The course will support increased recruitment into the profession, particularly from the South of England and from mature students.

Students, through blended learning opportunities, will learn core Orthoptics and Ophthalmology modules in addition to research methods, statistics and extended clinical knowledge of complex ophthalmic and neuro-ophthalmic conditions.

The programme also provides 1,000 hours of placement activity so that students will graduate with first-hand clinical experience.

Programme Director, Dr Dipesh Patel who is an Honorary Clinical Research Fellow (Orthoptics) at Moorfields Eye Hospital, said: “We are excited to be launching a unique programme which will allow students an accelerated route to gain theoretical knowledge and clinical training, underpinning professional registration and to fast-track a career to practice as an autonomous Orthoptist.”

Co-Director and IoO Consultant Orthoptist, Ms. Leena Patel, said: “In this programme, UCL’s Institute of Ophthalmology together with Moorfields will offer students the most updated practices and technology available, teaching participants how to address eye conditions through instruction from some of the leading clinical experts in the field.”

The official launch is being held virtually, via Zoom, on 12 January 2021, 6-7pm. Click on the link below to attend.
