The UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, part of the Faculty of Brain Sciences, is a world leader in research and education. Through the partnership with Moorfields Eye Hospital, our pre-eminent researchers and clinicians deliver breakthroughs in eye health. One of our key strengths lies in using regenerative medicine to develop new therapies.

The Cells for Sight Transplantation and Research Programme (CFS) is pioneering the prevention and treatment of ocular surface disease. It is home to a manufacturing unit which produces corneal stem cell grafts for Moorfields Eye Hospital. This is also available to academic and commercial researchers for the manufacture of ATMPs.

Researchers can choose to work independently or collaborate with CFS scientists. CFS has undertaken consultancy work with Pfizer and ReNeuron. In a recent project with ReNeuron, CFS manufactured human retinal pigmented cells (hRPC) for a clinical trial to treat a retinal disease that often leads to blindness.

CFS also offers 'technology transfer' services, using their regulatory expertise to transform laboratory procedures into regulatory compliant processes. In addition, the CFS team is due to launch short educational courses in the development, manufacture and delivery of ATMPs.
