Argentina - Universidad Torcuato di Tella^

Universidad Torcuato di Tella (UTDT) is a non-profit private university that was founded in 1991 by the then Argentine ambassador to the United States, Guido di Tella and Gerardo della Paolera, the university's first dean. Adopting an American university model, this research based university offers a liberal arts education in the heart of Argentina. The university is primarily focused on social sciences, including undergraduate majors such as economics, business economics, business administration, law, political science, international relations, history and architecture. Their move to the Figueroa Alcorta campus in 2004 means that the university now occupies the redeveloped waterworks building, allowing you to study in the heart of Buenos Aires.

Language Requirements - In order to study at UTDT, you must have a minimum of 2 years of university level Spanish, or B2 level.

Academic Calendar

The first semester at UTDT runs from March to July, and the second semester runs from August to December. You will be starting in the second semester, beginning the year in late July at the mandatory Orientation programme. Torcuato di Tella was an Italian Argentine immigrant who began his firm by manufacturing bread making machines, which were all the rage in 1920’s Buenos Aires, believe it or not.

    Australia - Flinders University^

    Flinders University was established in 1966 at a time when a number of new institutions were launched in Australia, providing access to higher education for individuals who did not traditionally aspire to go to university. Since then, Flinders has increased in size and built a reputation for excellence in both teaching and research. The Bedford Park campus is located just south of Adelaide's central business district, and despite its central location is positioned on a spacious, elevated site which provides panoramic views of the city.

    Flinders University is named after the English navigator Matthew Flinders, who explored and surveyed the southern Australian coastline in 1802. The university was opened 164 years later by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.

     

    Australia - University of Melbourne^

    The University of Melbourne the second oldest university in Australia and ranked as the country's top institution. The campus is located in Parkville which is an inner suburb north of the Melbourne central business district. Melbourne has 22 discipline specific faculties, many of which top the Australian subject rankings when compared with other institutions in the country.

    Australia - University of Queensland^

    The University of Queensland (UQ) is one of Australia's highest ranking learning and research institutions. As a multi-faculty institution, UQ offers a range of subject areas across the arts and sciences, the majority of which are housed on the St Lucia campus. The main St Lucia campus is located seven kilometers from Brisbane's central business district and bounded on all sides by the Brisbane River.

    The University of Sydney doesn’t need much of an introduction. It's the first university to be established in Australia and is been growing since its founding in 1850.     Academic Calendar

    The academic calendar at Sydney starts with the first Semester from the beginning of March to the end of June, and the second Semester will run from the end of July to the beginning of November.     The University of Sydney houses many free museums, as well as the Nicholson Museum, which is the oldest university museum in Australia. Drop by and see the donations of Sir Charles Nicholson's private collection, with antiquities and curiosities from the Near Eastern, Italian, Greek, Egyption and Cypriot Collections.     Canada - McGill University^

    McGill University is one of the best known and highest ranking institutions in Canada. With students from 150 different countries, it is also the most internationally diverse university in the country. The location of Mcgill in Montréal makes it an excellent option for BASc students who are taking French as their Core language. McGill is a fully comprehensive university and even offers a Bachelor of Arts and Science degree which has many similarities the the BASc here at UCL.

    Despite being located in French speaking Montréal, the language of instruction at McGill English.

    Canada - Université de Montréal

    Université de Montréal is the second largest institution in Canada with 60,000 students and is considered to be one of the top institutions in the French-speaking word. With 16 faculties and 80 departments and schools, programmes in almost every academic field are offered. Being located in the French speaking province of Quebec, the language of instruction at the Université de Montréal is predominantly French.

    Academic Calendar

    At the Université de Montréal, the semesters run from September - December (Fall Semester) and January - April (Winter Semester). Summer is a complementary session and in general it is not compulsory. The full academic calender for the Université de Montréal can be found here.

    Language

    The language of instruction at Montréal is French. However, many of the reference works used by professors are written in English (particularly in the hard sciences), and exchange students are permitted to submit their homework and exams in English (although the questions in the exams will be in French). Students are recommended to have reached a minimum of French Level 3 (C) at CLIE to study at Université de Montréal.

    Did you know?

    Average winter temperatures in Montréal regularly fall below zero, so make sure you pack your thermals! However, an underground network connects many buildings so you can stay in the warm when the cold sets in!

    Canada - University of British Columbia^

    The University of British Columbia (UBC) is consistently ranked as one of Canada’s top institutions and currently sits in the top 50 in the QS Global Rankings. UBC is located in Vancouver, with the main (Vancouver) campus located 20 minutes from the city centre on the western tip of the Point Grey Peninsula. The idyllic campus is surrounded by forest on three sides and the ocean on the other – a beautiful and inspiring place to study. UBC is a fully comprehensive institution where a wide range of arts and sciences specialisms are taught.

    Chile - Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile^

    Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile or PUC is one of the most prestigious institutions in Latin America. It is known for academic excellence and is regularly placed at the top of the South American rankings. Based in Santiago de Chile with the Andes providing a specuatular backdrop, PUC has four main campuses; Casa Central, San Joaquín, Oriente and Lo Contador. The San Joaquín campus houses College UC which is PUC's interdisciplinary programme.

    The academic calendar at PUC runs from March to July (semester 1) and August to December (semester 2). In order to fit in with the academic calendar at UCL, students studying at PUC will start in August which is the second semester in Chile.     China - Chinese University of Hong Kong (Morningside College)

    Established in 1963, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is one of our younger partner institutions. Despite this, it is the second oldest university in the region and one of the top institutions in Hong Kong. It is a comprehensive research university which seeks to 'combine tradition with modernity, and bring together China and the West'. At CUHK, exchange students can take courses from the eight faculties depending on their academic interests. Despite Cantonese being the primary language in Hong Kong, many courses are taught in English.

    China - Shanghai Jiao Tong University

    After an edict from Emperor Guangxu, Nanyang Public School was founded in 1896. However, it did not become known as Shanghai Jiao Tong University until the 1950s. Since then it has grown rapidly to become one of China's most prestigious and highest ranking institutions. Shanghai Jiao Tong University or SJTU as it is also known, is comprised of five campuses, with most undergraduate students based at the Minhang Campus on the outskirts of metropolitan Shanghai.

    The main language of instruction at SJTU is Mandarin. However, many courses are also offered in English. This means that students of all Mandarin levels can be accommodated.

    China - Zhejiang University

    Zhejiang University is a comprehensive research university located in the city of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Established in 1897, it is one of China's oldest and highest ranking institutions. Seven faculties offer a wide range of arts and science subjects where interdisciplinarity is favoured.

    Colombia - Universidad de los Andes

    Universidad de Los Andes, or Uniandes as it is also known, was founded in 1948 and was the first private institution in Colombia to be non-denominational and independent from political parties. It continues to lead the way in higher education and is currently ranked as the top institution in Colombia. It is also consistently ranked within the top ten of all South American universities. Located in Bogota's historical city centre, the Carrera Campus houses nine schools, including Arts and Humanities, Sciences, Social Sciences, Economics and Engineering.

    Academic Calendar

    The academic calendar at Uniandes runs from January - May (term 1) and August - December (term 2). In order to fit in with the academic calendar at UCL, students studying at Uniandes will start in August which is the second term in Colombia. They will then take the first term of the next academic year (January - May). Students must bear this in mind when planning their internship.     Did you know?

    The mascot of Universidad de Los Andes is a goat named Séneca who used to roam around the Carrera Campus. He was adopted by students and later became the universities mascot. Every year on Students' Day, a goat is taken to the campus to celebrate.

    Ecuador - Universidad San Francisco de Quito

    Established in 1988, Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) was the first Liberal Arts institution in the Andean region. Since its inception, USFQ has increased in size and is now comprised of 16 colleges and institutes spread across three campuses. The picturesque main campus is located in Cumbayá, 20 minutes east of Quito city centre.

    Language

    The language of instruction at USFQ is Spanish. However, approximately 10% of courses are also offered in English making it easier for students with less Spanish experience.

    Did you know?

    Universidad San Francisco de Quito also has a campus on the Galápagos Islands! Exchange students have the option of spending one semester at GAIAS (The Galápagos Institute for the Arts and Sciences) but would have to pay additional tuition costs. More information about GAIAScan be found here.

    France - École Normale Supérieure (Paris)

    École Normale Supérieure - Paris, or ENS, is a French grande école located in the heart of the Latin Quarter of Paris. It is a renowned institution and research centre which accommodates some of France's brightest young people, with offerings across the arts, sciences and social sciences. Currently ranked at number 43 in the QS World University Rankings, ENS is the highest ranked of all French institutions.

    Academic Calendar

    The academic year at ENS runs from September - December (semester 1) and February - May (semester 2).

    Language

    The language of instruction at ENS is French. Students are recommended to have reached a minimum of French Level 3 (C) at CLIE to study at ENS.

    France - Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po)

    Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris or Sciences Po as it is more commonly known is one of the highest ranked universities in France and is considered to be one of the world's most prestigious institutions for studying social sciences. In addition, to the social sciences, humanities are also taught at Sciences Po. The campus is located in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighbourhood in central Paris, close to the National Assembly and French Government Ministries. Sciences Po also have six other campuses spread throughout France, thus offering students the potential to study outside of the capital.

    Language

    The language of instruction at Sciences Po, Paris is French. However, a large number of courses are also taught in English, so students of all levels of French will be catered for. Language prerequisites at the other campuses vary, but a list of language requirements can be found here.

    France - Université Pierre et Marie Curie

    Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC) or Paris VI as it is also called is an institution that specialises in Science and Medicine. Following the French cultural revolution in 1968, the University of Paris was separated into thirteen different institutions. UPMC was established in 1971 having absorbed the Faculty of Sciences. The main Jussieu Campus is located in the Latin Quarter of Paris, adjacent to the Seine. Students who study at UPMC also have the option of taking additional courses from Université Paris-Sorbonne.

    Germany - University College Freiburg

    Since its foundation in 1457, the University of Freiburg has offered a comprehensive range of arts and sciences subjects, which today provide students with the opportunity to continue their interdisciplinary studies. The University has three main campuses in the city, with other university buildings located around Freiburg. It is said that the university buildings have grown with the city. University College Freiburg (UCF) is the home for the Liberal Arts and Sciences, a programme which has a similar philosophy to the BASc.

    Academic Calendar

    The academic year runs from October - March (Wintersemester) and April - September (Summersemester). However, teaching does not occur for the duration of the academic year. Teaching normally runs from October - February and then April - July. The full academic calendar for the University of Freiburg can be found here.

    Language

    The language of instruction at UCF is English. Exchange students with a good level of German can also take courses from other programmes at Freiburg that are taught in German. Students can also take courses at Strasbourg and Basel, and at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (in French and German, respectively).

    Japan - Hitotsubashi University

    Hitotsubashi University is the only institution in Japan that specialises in humanities and social sciences. At the undergraduate level there are four faculties: Commerce and Management, Economics, Law, and Social Sciences. Hitotsubashi is comprised of three campuses, all of which are based in Tokyo and currently has 4,400 undergraduate students.

    The academic calendar at Hitotsubashi runs from April - late July (term 1) and September - February (term 2). In order to fit in with the academic calendar at UCL, students studying at Hitotsubashi will start in September which is the second term.     The founder of The Commercial Training School which later became Hitotsubashi University was Arinori Mori. In his youth, Arinori Mori studied here at UCL!

    Japan - University of Tokyo^

    The University of Tokyo or Todai as it is known is the top ranked institution in Japan and one of the most prestigious in Asia. Todai has five main campuses and 10 different faculties. All undergraduates spend their first two years at the Komaba Campus where they complete general education classes. The final two years are then spent specialising in their chosen academic fields. The Komba Campus also houses the College of Arts and Sciences. Undergraduate exchange students are based at Komaba or the Hongo Campus.

    The academic calendar at Todai runs from April - late July (term 1) and September - late January (term 2). In order to fit in with the academic calendar at UCL, students studying at Todai will start in September which is the second term.     Japan - Waseda University^

    Founded by Shigenobu Okuma in 1882, Waseda University was founded with the intention of developing Japanese leaders of the future. It has grown into a comprehensive institution with 13 undergraduate schools, 23 graduate schools, and other research and affiliated institutes. Waseda has seven campuses spread across Japan, with the main campus in Tokyo.

    Reublic of Korea - Seoul National University

    Seoul National University (SNU) was founded in 1946 and is the first national university of Korea. With 83 departments for undergraduate students, SNU offers a wide range of options across varying academic disciplines. The 350 hectare Gwanak Campus is the largest in Seoul and is located just outside of the city centre.

    The academic calendar at SNU runs from March to February and is comprised of two semesters which run from March - June (Spring Semester) and September -December (Fall Semester). In order to fit in with the academic calendar at UCL, students studying at SNU will start in the Fall Semester which is the second term.     The language of instruction at SNU is Korean. However, many courses are also taught in English.

    Such is the size of Gwanak, shuttle buses are provided to transport students around the campus. SNU also has its own metro station!

    Netherlands - University College Maastricht

    Maastricht University is considered to be one of the strongest and most international institutions in the Netherlands. The Liberal Arts and Sciences Programme offered by University College Maastricht (UCM) is similar in nature to the Arts and Sciences BASc, providing students with opportunities to continue studying a range of academic disciplines with an emphasis on interdisciplinarity. UCM is located in a former medieval convent in the Jekerkwartier neighbourhood in central Maastricht, surrounded by a combination of modern buildings, 17th century townhouses, cobblestone streets and charming squares.

    New Zealand - University of Auckland^

    The University of Auckland was founded in 1883, with a disused courthouse and jail serving as the university premises. The university is now considered to be New Zealand's top institution with the most comprehensive range of courses in the country. The City Campus is where the highest number of University of Auckland students study, and is located in the heart of Auckland.

    Academic Calendar

    The academic calendar at the University of Auckland runs from February - June (Semester 1) and July - November (Semester 2). In order to fit in with the academic calendar at UCL, students studying at Auckland will start in July which is the second semester in New Zealand.     Russia - Higher School of Economics, Saint Petersburg

    Higher School of Economics (HSE) is one of the leading and largest institutions in Russia. The campus at St. Petersburg opened in 1997, and offers students the chance to study a range of social science and humanities subjects in an interdisciplinary context. In addition, Russian language teaching is provided so BASc students studying Russian will be able to progress their language skills.

    Language

    The main language of instruction at HSE is Russian. However, the institution also offers a large number of courses in English, making it a suitable destination for all students regardless of their Russian language level.

    HSE is one of the most internationalised institutions in Russia, with a wide range of international partners and a cosmopolitan place to study. Unlike many European institutions HSE also offers accommodation to exchange students.

    Singapore - National University of Singapore^

    Founded in 1905, the National University of Singapore (NUS) is Singapore's oldest and largest institution. NUS is comprised of three campuses (Kent Ridge, Bukit Timah and Outram) where over 37,00 students study. 16 faculties and schools provide students with a range of arts and science courses, which are enhanced through additional multi-disciplinary courses.

    Spain - Universitat Autònoma de Madrid

    Spain - Universidad de Salamanca

    Founded in 1218 by King Alfonso IX of Leon, Universidad de Salamanca is Spain's oldest university. Located two hours west of Madrid in the town of Salamanca, Universidad de Salamanca is also considered to be one of the top institutions in Spain and an important centre for the study of humanities. A wide range of degree programmes are offered, but the BASc agreements are specifically with the Faculty of Biology and the Faculty of Social Sciences. However, exchange students are also permitted to take 50% of their courses from other faculties which are spread over six different campuses.

    The language of instruction at Salamanca is Spanish. Students are recommended to have reached a minimum of Spanish Level 3 (C) at CLIE to study at Salamanca.

    Spain - Universidad de Sevilla

    Universidad de Sevilla (US) originated from the Santa María de Jesús School which was founded in the late 1460s. Since its inception, Universidad de Sevilla has developed into a leading Spanish institution with more that 70,000 students. A wide range of degree programmes are offered, but the BASc agreements are specifically with the Faculty of Communication and the Faculty of Geography and History. However, exchange students are also allowed to take 50% of their courses from other faculties. US campuses and faculties are spread spread across the city of Sevilla, capital of Andalusia. Our agreements at Sevilla are with the Faculties of History and Communication. This means that exchange students have to take 50% of their courses from either History or Communication. Students are then free to select their other courses from other faculties.

    The language of instruction at Sevilla is Spanish. Students are expected to have reached Spanish Level 4 (D) at CLIE to be accepted by Universidad de Sevilla.

    USA - Northwestern University^

    Northwestern University (NU) is one of UCL's newest partner institutions having launched in 2016/17. The exchange will allow BASc students to continue studying across the disciplines at an institution where all major students follow a foundation in liberal arts and sciences. NU has several campuses, but the main one and home of the undergraduate schools is the Evanston Campus located along the shores of Lake Michigan.

    Did you know?

    NU has a number of unique undergraduate traditions. One such tradition is 'Primal Scream' which is held at 9pm the night before finals week. Students use the opportunity to lean out of windows or gather on campus to scream, thus letting off some steam before the start of exams!

    USA - University of California^

    The University of California (UC) is public university system spread throughout the state of California and is considered to be one of the top public university systems in the world. UC is comprised of ten campuses, of which nine are available to BASc students (Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, San Diego).

    Please note that if you are offered a place at the University of California, you will have to indicate three campus choices. UC will then make your campus allocation.

    USA - University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill^

    The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is located in North Carolina, in the Southeast of the United States. It is one of the original eight Public Ivy schools that provides students with an Ivy League experience for a public school price. All undergraduate students receive a liberal arts education which is in keeping with the philosophy of the BASc. The sprawling 729 acre campus is an important part of the Chapel Hill community and is a textbook American campus-just like in the movies!

    USA - University of Texas at Austin^

    The University of Texas at Austin or UT Austin for short is the flagship institution of the University of Texas System. The System is composed of nine universities of which UT Austin is the largest with 51,331 students. UT Texas is academically strong across all subject areasand has been labelled as one of the 'Public Ivies'.

    USA - University of Washington^

    Founded in 1861, the University of Washington (UW) is one of the oldest universities on the West Coast. It is considered to be one of the "Public Ivies", offering an educational experience comparable with the Ivy League institutions. UW is a multi-campus institution, with three different campuses; Seattle, Tacoma and Bothell. However, the majority of exchange students will be based at the Seattle campus which is located on the shores of Union and Portage Bays.

    At the University of Washington, the academic year is split into three semesters. Autumn runs from September to December, Winter runs from January to early March, and then Spring runs from late March to June. The full academic calender for UW can be found here.

    Did you know?

    Students, alumni and sports teams at UW are known as the Washington Huskies. They were formally known as the Sun Dodgers, which was a reference to the local weather!
