Duties and Responsibilities

Set within UCL’s Faculty of The Built Environment, The Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources (BSEER) seeks to appoint a Professor to be Director of the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources (ISR) and to lead research on Resource Use and the Industrial Strategy.

BSEER a world-leading school on sustainability transformations in research and teaching and comprised of four world-class Institutes, providing the expert knowledge collaborative research and teaching of UCL Energy Institute, UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering, UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage and UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources. The School facilitates these Institutes by providing strategic leadership and a shared mission. We are supported by an international Partnerships and Advisory Board to help shape the debate and keep our work aligned to sustainability agendas industry and global governments. The School’s structure enables our staff and students take on core roles of institutional citizenship to support and elevate our ways of working in achieving our ambitions. BSEER allows staff to participate more easily in multidisciplinary research to solve real-world problems, both at The Bartlett and in the wider UCL community.

BSEER is a fast growing, internationally renowned School for cross disciplinary research with economists, energy modellers, social scientists, building engineers, physicists and heritage specialists all working to mitigate climate change. Continuous change is typical of the School environment and something that the staff thrive on and adapt to.

Key Requirements

We are looking for an inclusive academic leader with the capacity to think strategically and enable societal transformations for a green recovery. They will have experience of leading a team including managers of others with well-developed leadership, inclusive team-building, interpersonal and influencing skills and the ability to build up and maintain effective working relationships across the organisation at all levels. Applicants will have to demonstrate internationally leading research findings proven by peer-reviewed publications and a track record in funding on key concepts such as a circular economy, climate strategies, resource-relevant SDGs, and sustainable and inclusive growth.

We expect candidates to have a holistic view on the life cycle of resources and their interlinkages (often called ‘the nexus’), and experience on how industrial strategies can accelerate transitions towards net zero carbon at various scales. A deep knowledge in a range of resources across a range of biotic resources including food, water, metals, and construction materials is expected; knowledge in energy is desirable, but in light of excellent in-house capabilities is not a required core expertise.

Proficiency of working with industrial partners, other stakeholders and on policy issues is an additional asset. We are looking for a strong multi-disciplinary profile with a background in the socio-economic dimensions of industrial ecology and multi-criteria assessments. Candidates are invited to bring in new perspectives on areas such as health, sustainable consumption, green chemistry, or new economic thinking.
