Evidence on Gatekeeper Harms

Overview

Starting in 2023, UCL IIPP’s digital economy and rents team will conduct research focusing on providing evidence on the harms which Gatekeeper platforms enact on its users and third-party ecosystems in order to increase its own profits and market power. This often occurs through the platform increasing the attention allocations and screen space devoted to inorganic (paid) outputs. This research stream uses large datasets scraped from websites, acquired from private data providers, and from SEO businesses. Building up a body of evidence on Big Tech evolving business practises is crucial to ensure regulations are targeting the most pernicious and widespread business practises.
