Ilan Strauss

Ilan Strauss is a Research Associate at the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP).


Dr. Ilan Strauss is a research associate at UCL’s Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP), looking at economic rents in digital platforms on a multi-year funded Omidyar project. He works on corporate disclosures, empirical analysis of firm-level data and ‘big’ datasets, and digital rents theory. He is also a senior research associate at the University of Johannesburg (industrial development).

His work is published in the International Review of Financial Economics, Transnational Corporations Journal, African Development Review, International Labour Organization (ILO) Research and Country Papers, Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET) Oxford University, and Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI) at Columbia University.

Previously, Ilan taught macroeconomics at Rice University (Jones Graduate School of Business) and at New York University (Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies). He has consulted for Airfinity (London), UNCTAD (Investment Division), the African Development Bank (AfDB), UNIDO, the ILO, and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

He holds a Ph.D in economics from the New School for Social Research (New York) and an MSc in economics from SOAS (University of London, First Class).

Research summary

Ilan specializes in firm-level data, capital investment demand, secular stagnation, Bayesian panel & mixed effects modelling, foreign direct investment, and applied economics.
