20 June 2022

Dr Carolina Alves joins IIPP as their new Associate Professor in Economics

IIPP is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Carolina Alves as their new Associate Professor in Economics.

Carolina joins IIPP with a specialisation in macroeconomics and international political economy, with regional expertise in Latin America.

Carolina comes from Girton College at the University of Cambridge where she was the Joan Robinson Research Fellow in Heterodox Economics and a College Teaching Officer at the Faculty of Economics. At Cambridge, she has been leading teaching in macroeconomics, political and social aspects of economics, and history and philosophy of economics, while also being the Director of Studies for Economics for second-year undergrads, and a member of Girton’s College Council responsible for the stewardship of the College.

Carolina is the co-founder of Diversifying and Decolonising Economics – a network of economists working to promote inclusiveness in economics in both the academic content and the field’s institutional structures. She is a member of the Rebuilding Macroeconomics Advisory Group - a research initiative aimed at re-invigorating macroeconomics and bringing it back to the fore as a policy-relevant social science, as well as being the co-editor for the Developing Economics blog, which takes a critical approach to creating discussion and reflection in the field of economics.

She is also a board member on the Progressive Economy Forum Council (PEF) and Positive Money.

On her appointment Carolina says:

"IIPP is one of the few places in academia right now where teaching, research and policy-making come together under the specific Mission of building a better society, focusing mainly on individuals' well-being and emphasising the need to be open to a range of theories, methods and disciplines. A heterodox economist's dream. At IIPP, I will be dealing with real-world issues, getting creative to find solutions for them, talking to policymakers on a daily basis while working with some of the best minds in academia, and being led by one of the most formidable women in economics of my time. I'm extremely lucky, and I can't wait to be part of the IIPP team!"

IIPP Director, Prof. Mariana Mazzucato also said:

“I am delighted to announce Carolina’s appointment as Associate Professor in Economics at IIPP. As we expand our work globally, in particular in Africa and in Latin America, her deep knowledge and insight into the economics of development, and the need for new economic thinking to create radical new policy approaches will be invaluable to us. Carolina is also a leading figure in promoting inclusiveness in economics through Diversifying and Decolonising Economics (D-Econ), and her insights will be crucial for the Institute’s work to create the much-needed change in the economics curriculum globally.”
