"The climate emergency will be addressed in and through cities!”

This oft-repeated assertion is confronted in practice with the ambivalent relationship cities and urban areas entertain with the environment: at once exhausting ecosystems within and beyond their boundaries and spearheading innovative responses to escalating environmental crises. In this urgent context, what is the role of universities, and of built environment faculties specifically? Put another way, what does taking the climate emergency seriously mean for universities’ core education, research and public engagement functions?

Ahead of COP28, this webinar brings in conversation Bartlett, UCL and international colleagues Aromar Revi (Indian Institute of Human Settlements), Amollo Ambole (African Mayoral Leadership Initiative), Christer Anditi (Stellenbosch University), Priti Parikh (UCL) and Tristan McCowan (UCL). Together, speakers will interrogate the role of universities as actors with ‘glocal’ responsibility in the context of the climate emergency.

The event is part of the Bartlett Publics: Pluralising series which seeks to facilitate cross-learning on the principles and practices of an international engagement better able to catalyse universities’ ‘public’ role and societal relevance. Christoph Lindner, Dean of The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment, will provide the opening remarks, and Barbara Lipietz, The Bartlett Vice Dean International, will chair the event.
