PG Dip Smart Cities and Urban Analytics

CASA offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Smart Cities and Urban Analytics. This route follows the same structure as our MSc programme, but candidates do not complete a final dissertation project.


The programme is unique in its focus on the core research challenges that relate to the infrastructure of smart cities. 

From their operational functions and planning, through to management and control and optimisations to explore the notion of a city as a laboratory for innovation, the course reflects the change that technologies are making to the operation and our understanding of the city.

About the course

The PG Dip provides portfolios of urban simulation in order to:

  • inform future design
  • explore and develop technologies around sensing and flows
  • develop an understanding of smart systems theory 
  • develop a skill set in quantitative methods, geographic information science and programming

The course builds on the need for a skill set in programming, spatial data capture and the ability for urban analysis with an understanding of the theory and context to urban systems. 

The Postgraduate Diploma comprises of six core modules (105 credits) and one optional module (15 credits). The PG Dip Smart Cities and Urban Analytics programme follows the same structure as the MSc except that the dissertation is not required. It is possible to enrol on a part-time basis (two years) or a flexible basis (up to five years). You can choose how many modules to study each year to suit your other commitments (as long as they follow a logical sequence – for example, some modules must be taken before other modules to ensure positive learning outcomes). Your selection can be made in conjunction with the programme director, who will be able to advise you. Each module has approximately 20-30 hours of contact time. Teaching varies according to the module in question: some are project based, some technical and some lecture style. In addition to the contact time, you would be expected to dedicate around 120 additional hours of private study per module (for a 15 credit module). This can take the form of private reading, independent project work, required written work and student or tutor led e-learning contact.

Students are equipped with key quantitative practical skills such as mathematical and statistical modelling, computer programming, spatial analysis and cartographic visualisation, underpinned by broad theoretical perspectives on the demographics, economics, form, function, network interactions, governance, policy, planning and – crucially – science of cities across the world.

RTPI Pathway

There are two different routes for this programme, PG Dip Smart Cities & Urban Analytics and PG Dip Smart Cities & Urban Analytics (RTPI Pathway). The RTPI (Royal Town Planning Institute) pathway is available to all, although only applicants who hold a first degree in planning already approved by the RTPI as the first three years of an accredited 3+1 programme will gain full RTPI accreditation at the end of this degree.
