Join us for an evening of lightning talks on the development of the journal Environment and Planning B: 50 Years of Development, hosted by Professor Michael Batty (Editor and Chairman, Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, UCL).
Environment and Planning B was founded in 1974 as part of the founding and growth of the Environment and Planning series of journals. The first journal in the family acquired the label A, and was focused on quantitative methods and models in urban and regional studies, planning and geography. B was orientated towards architecture and design, and over the years B has become more focused on cities, although design and spatial analytics still play a major part in its publication. The journal has grown dramatically from two issues a year in 1974, with some 250 pages of papers, to nine issues a year in 2023 with some 2800 pages. In the last 25 years, the journal has been mainly edited from UCL but it began in Cambridge, and at various points has been edited from the Open University, the RCA, Cardiff, UCLA and Buffalo.
This celebration reflects the fact that the journal, its editors and its readers are keenly aware of developments in the field; this is an opportunity to reflect on the way the field has changed and will change in future years.
The evening's talks will begin from 6pm including contributions from Michael Batty (CASA, UCL), Paul Longley (Geography, UCL), Phil Steadman (BSEER, Bartlett), Linda See (IISAA, Vienna)and Alex Singleton (Liverpool). Followed by a drinks reception in the South Cloisters, UCL.
