Bartlett Design Research Folios Launch New Series

16 May 2022

The 2022 series of The Bartlett Design Research Folios is now available to read online, having been published earlier this month.

Bartlett Design Research Folios 2021

The Bartlett Design Research Folios is an architectural publication that provides designers, practitioners, and academics from across The Bartlett School of Architecture with a platform to convey the purpose and process of design research in their work. Each folio presents a visual and textual narrative of a specific project, unpacking its ideas and deeper layers of context, its methods and experimentation, and some of its dissemination.

The 2022 series features projects produced between 2015–2021 and adds 28 folios to the 2015 series, which covers works from 2008–2014, extending the overall publication to 66 books to date. In total, the folios form an evolving and time-sensitive atlas of design research at The Bartlett School of Architecture. Many of the featured projects extend their influence beyond the academic sphere and directly impact on the experienced world.

The series belongs to The Bartlett’s broader portfolio of interdisciplinary research deemed as 'world leading' and 'internationally excellent’ in its vast majority by the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021).

This pioneering publication is influential in the design field of built environment research in the UK and internationally. Each folio embodies a model of practice, rather than simply a project, showing distinctive ways of embedding imagination in research and rigour in design. Many of the authors play leading or transformative roles in external design partnerships and the featured buildings and exhibited or performed projects are already influencing places and design cultures."
